Game 3: Texas vs OU (Recap & post game added)

Your vision is light years better than Blue's.

Thanks, Joey.  I think Johnson agrees.  He was looking toward the team, shaking his head, like Blue really sucks, as he walked off.

Like the shakeup of the lineup later in the game to get some things going.    It didn't happen for them today, but it shows that the coaching staff is trying to find some contributors.

At some point, the players have to produce.  It seems to me that this team has some snakebit tendencies.  Guys like Shaw, CJ and Johnson, who were on fire early in the season, can't get things going now.  The loss of Cooper as a pitcher before the season is proving to be much larger of an issue than anticipated at the time.

On the up side, TCU lost their series to K St today 2-1, and OSU is down 3-1 to Kansas in the rubber match of there series.  The conference race is wide open still.

Well, Spieth is hanging in. So there's that which is nice.

Losing home series to unranked teams this late in the season doesn't bolster my confidence in a long postseason run.

I admit to not reading any of this thread but was it mentioned how many times we struck out on what would have been ball 4? I didn't get to watch much of the game (had things to do) but I saw it at least twice, maybe more.

We swung at balls outside the strike zone all damn day. Including what would've been ball four.

This is what happens when umpires expand the zone and call pitches that are clearly out of the zone as strikes. It causes hitters to chase more.

Tres' KS on the pitch up at his eyes on 3-2 count doesn't fall into this category.

they're so worried about the Wrath-o-Slim they'll now swing at anything once they get strike 2. He and his hat have effed up this whole season.

Yes I realize that. But we swung at some pitches too far out of the zone for even a shitty ump to miss them.

I blame Slim. Players don't like being called Cigar Store Indians.

When Blue's strike zone is as.....whatever it was....today, I bet it's hard to lay off of pitches when you don't know if Blue is gonna sit you down anyway.

FINAL: Oklahoma 3 – Texas 2

In the series finale with a win hanging in the balance, Texas did not produce the timely hit they needed, falling to Oklahoma, 3-2. The 2-1 series loss is the third straight weekend series lost by Texas, who has now lost eight of the last nine games.

Augie Garrido was frustrated with the outcome, “The difference in the game was RBI hits. They had one more than we did and we had a foul ball that ties the game [miss] by three feet, so that's the difference in the game.” Garrido continued by saying it wasn’t this particular game that upset him, it was that this game happened in the midst of an unexpected run of 17 defeats.

The Sooners racked up 12 hits on the afternoon – the Longhorns had 11. The teams combined for 21 singles, with each squad only having one extra base hit (a double by Collin Shaw (UT) and a double by Craig Aikin (OU)).

OU struck for single runs in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th innings, with Taylor Alspaugh’s sixth inning RBI to center field proving to be the difference in the game. Michael Cantu and Tres Barrera each had two hits in addition to the Horns’ two RBI’s.

Starting pitcher Kyle Johnston only lasted 2.1 innings, allowing six baserunners, but striking out two hitters and only giving up one earned run. Seven other pitchers entered in relief for the final 6.2 innings of the game. Chad Hollingsworth and Travis Duke were the only relievers to throw for more than 1.0 IP, but each player also allowed one run.

OU starter Robert Tasin earned the win by scattering nine hits and two walks over 6.0 innings of work. Jacob Evans got the save (4), by throwing the final three frames where he did not walk a batter and struck out three Longhorns.

On message to the team: â€œSkip Johnson delivered the sermon. We have to do better. We have to convert and take quality at bats in certain situations. It's really the problem. It's about RBIs, not hits.”

His outlook on today’s game: â€œThe difference in the game certainly wasn't hits. The difference in the game was RBI hits. They had one more than we did and we had a foul ball that ties the game by three feet, so that's the difference in the game. The pitchers on both sides were pretty much the same. We may have walked more but that's because they did a better job of managing their strike zone than we did.”

On not having a Sunday starter: â€œIt's a legitimate concern. We have to win all three games, especially the position we are in now. We must win at least two of three in each one of these games. The Sunday game typically can be anyone's game. We would have an ace for Sunday if [Chad] Hollingsworth wasn't slowed down by his shoulder.”

On freshman catcher, Michael Cantu: â€œI think [Michael] Cantu was absolutely spectacular this weekend. He threw out every base runner that tried to run on him. He caught the ball. He blocked the ball. He took quality at bats. He is a very mature baseball player. We certainly have a leader and a model to follow in him.”

Michael Cantu

On the team’s approach: â€œWe don't look at the standings. The most important game is the next one. We just have to keep grinding and keep trying to win ball games. I think if we do that, everything will take care of itself. We can't worry about wins or losses. We just have to worry about the next game.”

On today’s game: â€œWe hit balls hard, but they just didn't fall for us. We squared some balls up with runners in scoring position, they just didn't fall. It's frustrating. We just need to stay focused and composed. Baseball is a frustrating game and it's just how you react to it and keep rolling.”

On his personal success, despite the loss: â€œI think just trusting myself and having confidence in my teammates. It's trusting myself, my defense, my players, and my teammates. I think that's a big thing.”

yep, taking called strike three's with runners in scoring position is always a better plan than taking a cut.

I mean, by God, we've got to stand on principle around here!
