Early in the 2002 season, a fixture at Longhorn baseball games made an asinine comment to me and another person about Augie. It wasn't surprising because the guy thinks he is some kind of an expert, but demonstrates he isn't to anyone who will listen. It was actually humorous - something about Augie not knowing how to coach hitting an in-field single, or something to that effect. Really? Yep, how many National Championships has the guy won? I didn't argue, just ignored him. Some things aren't worth discussing.
I am of the opinion that one of the cornerstones of Augie's success is his ability to build intensity throughout the season. He is a master of the mental aspect of the game. His goal isn't the Big 12, it is the CWS. He knows how to evaluate a team and their abilities, and he develops them accordingly.
A key to success at high levels of competition is the mental aspect. Athletes cannot work at the same level of intensity during the entire season-particularly throughout a long season. Augie seems to build the intensity throughout the season, until it reaches a peak at crunch time. Anyone who gets down on Texas baseball early in the season is a fool.
Matt, I agree, guys auditioned this weekend. Why a four game series?
