"Today UT Austin President Bill Powers submitted a letter of resignation, effective June 2, 2015, and I have accepted it." -Cigarroa

So will this prevent Perry from putting in a hack?

Perry can do what he wants, but the incoming governor will have control of the appointment once he takes office after the November election.

Ah...got it.

Not totally up to speed on Rick Perry's "7 Solutions" proposal for higher education, but most at UT view it as a negative.  Universities have a difficult balancing act. Do we want recognition as a "premier research institution"?  How do we accomplish that mission while maintaining high standards for practical instruction.

I suspect that Perry is out of his depth and should've kept his focus on the TEA and K-12.  Good to know he wasn't selectively screwing UT to benefit A&M.  Looks to me like he screwed both equally....at least as it pertains to university leadership.

if i'm a UT fan i'm looking at this as a win.

a search for his replacement can happen without perry meddling.

Powers won this battle, IMHO. I think he always intended to retire (resign) in 2015.

Now that this is behind us, it is time to come together and continue to build a great university.

I suspect big changes are ahead in higher education, and we need a new president that can be in the forefront of that. Without interference from an Aggie governor.

The incoming gov will in all likelihood will be Greg Abbot and he is a UT grad.
