The Longhorns wore numbers on their helmets in Saturday’s 56-7 win against New Mexico State in honor of the 1963 football team which won the school’s first football national championship 50 years ago.  It was uncertain if the team would wear the numbers all season long – Mack Brown left that up to the players to decide.  On Monday at his weekly press conference, Coach Brown announced after the New Mexico State game the team voted overwhelmingly (more than 90%) to keep numbers on the helmets for the remainder of the season.   And so it will be.

Other notable tidbits from Mack’s Labor Day Presser:

  •  WR Kendall Sanders is hopeful for this week’s game against BYU.
  •

  • Defensive Back Josh Turner is available to play this week.
  •

  • Mack made mention of all the play-makers on offense.  He notes that it will be up to Major (Applewhite) and Darrell Wyatt to get the ball in the right hands at the right time.
  •

  • The players will be prepared for the altitude in Provo.
  •

  • Daje is expected to perform week-in and week-out like he did against New Mexico State (62 yards rushing – 1 TD, 67 yards receiving – 1 TD).
  •

  • The coaches were extremely pleased with David Ash and his ability to make plays.
  •

  • There was concern about the slow offensive start in the NMSU game.  Texas will need to put points on the board much sooner and more frequently against BYU or the game will be much more difficult to win.
  •

Finally, Daje Johnson answered questions from media member David Ash:
