This weekend, the top-ranked Texas Longhorns will host the ULM Warhawks. Today, our Devon Messinger and Dylan DeRaud discuss their scouting report of the Warhawks in the YouTube video above.
Messinger’s Scouting Report of the ULM Offense:
On offense, Bryant Vincent’s squad is led by quarterback General Booty, a redshirt junior transfer from Oklahoma. So far this season, Booty’s favorite targets have been wide receivers Javon Campbell (6’3″) and Davon Wells (5’10”). While Campbell and Wells lead the team in production at the receiver prediction, they have only tallied a combined 135 yards and two touchdowns through two games.
Furthermore, ULM’s running back situation has been a little bit less clear. In the backfield, Vincent has utilized a trio of running backs in freshman Ahmad Hardy, junior James Jones, and junior Taven Curry. Expect a heavy dose of the freshman in this contest as he continues to grow with the team throughout the season.
DeRaud’s Scouting Report of the ULM Defense:
Defensive Coordinator Earnest Hill has built a strong defense through their first two games. They defeated Jackson State 30-14, forcing two fumbles and grabbing an interception. Then, they beat UAB 32-6, forcing two more fumbles and another interception.
The reason for their success is due to key players on this defense like OLB Billy Pullen, a 6’3, 245-pound linebacker/defensive lineman hybrid. He leads the team with three sacks, four tackles for loss, 12 total tackles, and one forced fumble. At linebacker, Carl Glass Jr. leads the defense with 21 tackles and has forced a fumble.
In the secondary, strong safety Wydett Williams has 19 tackles, one interception, and one sack. Meanwhile, cornerback Car’lin Vigers also adds an interception and 15 tackles.
The defensive line, featuring Dylan Howell, Jaylan Ware, and Kevontay Wells, has been excellent at stopping the run. So far this season, they have allowed just 75.5 rushing yards per game, ranking No. 21 in run defense in the country. As a result, the Longhorns will need to mix things up offensively to keep the defense off-balanced.
