DaShaun White Discusses His Official Visit To Texas

Texas’ recruitment of Texas A&M linebacker commit DaShaun White has been a bit interesting. The Longhorns looked like they were going to extend an offer to White back in the summer when he visited Austin on his own dime to work out at a camp, enabling the staff to see him up close. White measured in above the expected measurables and tested very well, so it seemed like the next logical step was to put an offer on the table.

Not so fast, my friends. The offer came, but later on down the line a month after he already gave a verbal pledge to Texas A&M over Oklahoma. So did the late offer impact White’s perception of Texas? Yes, but the good news is he and the staff seem to have worked through that. “It did. It was brought to my attention why it (the offer) was so late and the numbers and things,” said White. “So I got to clear up a bit of confusion. It doesn’t affect anything now.”

Good things come to those who wait and in White’s case, the offer did, and he is approaching things with an open mind even though he is a current A&M pledge. White took his official visit to Texas over the weekend (Kansas game) and it’s safe to say things went well. “I liked it a lot. Felt like I got a really good feel for Coach Orlando and Coach Herman, which is something I didn’t fully have. I got to see them coach some and see how they are around players and family.”

After taking in the Longhorns’ victory over the Jayhawks, White thinks Orlando’s defense is playing at a “championship level” and he told HornSports that he believes he fits into Orlando’s defensive plans. He also tells us the staff projects him at Rover, which would enable them utilize his speed and range – similar to how they are using Malik Jefferson’s skillset.

One thing that has often been discussed relative to White’s recruitment is the impact Byron Hobbs , a current Texas commit, will have on his decision. Hobbs and White are very close and it is a weighing factor for White as he considers the Longhorns. “Of course, it gives us a chance to play together. Especially since we’ve always been competing against each other, and on top of that who doesn’t want to play with a close friend? It makes it that much better.” You already know Hobbs and his mother Natalia Vaughns (aka mUTha hustla) spent plenty of time working on White over the weekend and will continue to do so.

All in all it is safe to say that White’s official visit to Texas was a success. White gave his trip to Austin a 10 and said he really enjoyed hanging with his host Josh Thompson and the rest of the players. If you recall Thompson also was offered later on in the process after camping with Texas in the summer. He ended up flipping to Texas from in-state rival in TCU and also had a close friend connected to the Longhorn program. Could the result end up being the same for Texas this time around?

As far as future visits go, White is scheduled to officially visit Oklahoma State next week on the 24^th and then he will take his official to Texas A&M on December 8^th.
