The Texas Longhorns lost to Washington 37-31 in the Sugar Bowl on Monday night, and the following day lost arguably one of the most important players on their team on Tuesday – to the upcoming NFL Draft. Junior wide receiver Xavier Worthy announced his decision on social media, peppering it with thanks to those that supported him in his journey to get to the next level.

“My time here at the University of Texas has been filled with highs, lows, lessons and blessings. All of them a part of my journey and who I am today. I will be eternally grateful to those who have always believed in and supported me. My mom, family, Day 1s, coaches, football brothers and real fans. To play the sport I love at this level with some of the most talented guys in the game is a blessing I don’t take for granted, and I will continue to be thankful for. With that being said, I will be declaring for the NFL Draft.”

Originally committing to Michigan out of high school, he signed with the Wolverines during the early signing period in 2020 but ended up receiving a release from his National Letter of Intent. Shortly afterwards he committed to the Longhorns and Steve Sarksian, who was fresh on the job as head coach in Austin.

Worthy was a starter from Day 1 on the Forty Acres and never missed a game in his three seasons wearing burnt orange, despite dealing with several injuries. Projected as a late first round draft pick, he finishes his career with the Longhorns ranking 4th on the all-time receiving list with 2,755 yards on 197 receptions with 26 touchdowns.
