Texas isn’t as good as we believed.
The Longhorns picked the wrong night to lose their first game of the season. Oklahoma got railroaded by Ohio State and Notre Dame got beat by Michigan State.
With that being said, the Longhorns might be the team that has to carry water for the Big 12 this year. Texas has the “best” non-conference win against Notre Dame. I guess one could make an argument that Oklahoma State has the best quality win as they beat Pittsburgh on Saturday, however Texas has the “big name” opponent victory.
Now that the Big 12’s non-conference season is over, it might come down to (gulp) Baylor carrying the Big 12 into the College Football Playoffs. The problem is Baylor has not looked great and the sexual assault scandal will likely sway the College Football Playoff committee to NOT include Baylor.
So, it’s up to the Longhorns and unfortunately they are not ready for prime-time. Fans desperately wanted it. That yearning for greatness again eats at every Texas fan but they aren’t ready yet. Heck, the team may go 2-3 after the Red River Shootout. That’s a reality this team faces.
Let’s forget the Notre Dame win. Erase it from your memory. What was your preseason win-loss record? Mine was 7-5. Most would say between 6-6 and 8-4. That’s still possible and it’s more than probable that it will occur. Sure, we can say the bye week fixes all. However, it can’t fix depth and it can’t fix the lack of ability to stop anyone who can score a lot of points.
Many people have said that Texas is essentially what Baylor would have been with all the players Texas landed after the exodus related to the sexual assault scandal. Texas needs to learn to be proficient on offense and always ensure that they score on each possession. That’s their recipe for success. The defense will come in time, but it’s not there yet.

[*]FBS teams: Stop Scheduling North Dakota State. You never win, you only lose big. Iowa learned a big lesson on Saturday and now their season is practically over.
[*]Florida State proved they were overrated. Silly me for believing the hype but I should stick to the research. Their only weapon is Dalvin Cook. Stop him, you stop FSU.
[*]Also, welcome to the big time, Lamar Jackson. You deserve it. I’m glad that Louisville is doing well. Class program in the ACC. However, hold the brakes on Louisville being the top team in the nation. I don’t think so.
[*]Alabama may have the prestige, but they cannot stop spread attacks consistently. I know Bama homers will say “but we beat Clemson last year so you’re wrong!” However, they played a pedestrian Michigan State team in the first game of the playoff last year. If Bama has to play Ohio State and then Clemson, or vice versa, they are going to have a difficult time winning. Chad Kelly threw for 421 yards and Ole Miss was able to jump out to a 24-3 lead early. Alabama has a lot to prove still in my opinion.
[*]So who would I put at #1? Ohio State. They are a complete team that should hoist the trophy at the end of the season.
[*]Because of the late start on Saturday, I decided to go to the Missouri-Georgia game. I felt that Mizzou could give Georgia a game and boy did they. They had a chance to win but frankly tried to not lose the game instead of trying to win the game. Mizzou got bit by that mentality and ended up losing 28-27. An amazing game that I am exhausted from but it was a chance for Mizzou to show that they are better than last year’s squad. They are better, but the record won’t show it.
[*]Oregon did an amazing act before their game on Saturday. They laid a bouquet of flowers on their half of the field on the 27 yard line in honor of Nebraska’s punter who was killed in a car accident just two months ago. They didn’t have to do anything but they did and it was stunning.
[*]The trendy upset of Appalachian State over Miami was, well, not happening. 45-10 victory for the Hurricanes. Good win for Mark Richt.
