Commitment Focus: Jordan Elliott

At one point this season the Texas recruiting effort at defensive tackle was incredibly disappointing. The Longhorns addressed one of their top needs at the end of the season and today landed a commitment from Houston Westside (TX) defensive tackle Jordan Elliott. Elliott was previously committed to Houston, but always kept his mind open to overtures from other schools. Elliott also held offers from Baylor, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, and USC.

National Signing Day Recap: Longhorns Ink 23 Players to 2026 Class

Just months ago the Longhorns looked like they were out of options at the defensive tackle position. With several of the top in-state options choosing other schools, Texas was scrambling to find a solution. The situation wasn’t helped when Du’Vonta Lampkin failed to qualify and could not enroll in school at Texas. With depth at the position a question, Texas landed a commitment from Destrehan (LA) defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon who could turn into an ideal nose tackle candidate. What Texas lacked was a top end three-technique prospect, but after Ed Oliver there isn’t a better one in state than Elliott. Elliott is not only a talented player, but a well known athlete among the other top recruits in the state who could help Texas close the deal with several other big names.

Film Analysis

Elliott has a developed 6’5 305 lbs frame with very little bad weight. Elliott has the versatility to line up at the three-technique defensive tackle, or out wide as a five-technique in an odd front. His strong lower body allows him to anchor against the run, while a quick step and fast hands provide some punch in the pass rush. He has a tendency to play a little high at times, which can get him in trouble and negate his skill against more technically proficient players. Elliott shows good closing speed in the open field and is a sturdy tackler who uses good technique. Elliott favors the bull rush and could stand to add some pass rushing moves to his repertoire. His best quality is his great eye discipline and patient play that puts him in the right position to make an impact.

Final Verdict

Elliott is a big win at a need position for Texas. The Houston area prospect has already flipped on two schools and still plans on taking official visits so this will be one to watch. While his ceiling may never reach the level of a guy like Ed Oliver, Elliott is much closer to realizing his true potential than many of the other in-state prospects. His physically developed frame and instincts are important components for a prospect who will be depended upon to provide depth from the time he arrives. He’s perfect for Vance Bedford’s defense because of his versatility and skillset. If things go well for Elliott he should enjoy a career as a multiple time all conference player with a chance to go in the early rounds of the NFL draft.
