Texas holds an undefeated record in Ames, Iowa. Hopefully, Texas DT Paul Boyette did not jinx that.
“Iowa State’s not a very good team. One week [they] can play well, and the next week they can be flat,†said Boyette in Monday’s football press conference according to Kirk Bohls’ twitter account.
Iowa State is 2-5 heading into the game this weekend. The Cyclones lost last week 27-45 against Baylor, the No. 2 team in the country. Texas is 3-4 and coming off a 23-9 win last week against Kansas State, who is winless in Big 12 play.
Texas is 11-1 all-time against Iowa State. The Longhorns only loss happened in 2010 when the Cyclones won 28-21 in Austin.
However, Texas last two wins against Iowa State have not been pretty. A total of four points decided both of those games.
Last year Texas won 48-45 with a 21-yard field goal from Nick Rose with three seconds left in the game. The score was tied at 31 heading into the fourth quarter, and Texas struck first with a Malcolm Brown 1-yard touchdown run. Iowa State scored second with a touchdown as well. Tied again. The Longhorns scored another touchdown, and with 28 seconds left in the game, the Cyclones tied the game. It appeared this game would be decided in overtime until Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes completed a 39-yard and 29-yard pass to set up the Longhorns at first and goal with four seconds left on the clock. Nick Rose came out to kick the game winning field goal.
In 2013 the Longhorns won 31-30. However, the end of the game still remains controversial. With less than 1:30 left on the clock, the Longhorns possessed the football in Cyclones territory at first and goal. Johnathan Gray ran the ball on first down, gaining a yard on the play and appearing to fumble the ball. The officials ruled Gray down. Without any video evidence to overturn the call, the Longhorns kept possession. Gray took the ball again on second down, fumbled and recovered the ball. Case McCoy kept the ball on third down and scored, giving Texas a one-point lead. The Texas defense intercepted the ball on the Cyclones last drive of the game, stealing the Texas victory.
This year, Iowa State decided Texas would be its homecoming game, and the Cyclones present a tougher matchup than Boyette expresses.
Texas has scored a total of 173 points this year, and Iowa State 188. The Longhorns two lowest scoring games combine for 10 points. The Cyclones two lowest scoring games combine for a total of 38 points, with one of those games being against TCU where Iowa State put up 21 points. Texas only scored seven points against the Horned Frogs.
The Longhorns will need their first road win of the season in order to stay undefeated in Ames.
