It’s wasn’t the most memorable buzzer beater in Texas Basketball (I give that to the 2006 NCAA Tournament game versus West Virginia), but it was an important one for this team. With Cameron Ridley disqualified from the game with 5 fouls, the Texas Longhorns couldn’t afford to go to overtime with the Kansas State Wildcats. Thomas Gipson and Shane Southwell were driving the ball at will and had all the momentum…

It came down to 1.9 seconds after Demarcus Holland called a timeout because he didn’t feel comfortable taking the shot. He made the right choice. Jonathan Holmes caught the ball in the deep corner and released it. The basket was money and the Longhorns got their 4th straight win, the second straight in Big 12 play.

He was quiet all night but that 3 pointer at the buzzer delivered  a clutch performance by the junior from San Antonio.

Epilogue:

This was a huge win for the Texas Longhorns. Not only doesn’t it give them their 4th straight win, but makes them 4-2 in the Big 12. To get to 10-8 in the Big 12 (which in my estimation would secure an NCAA bid), they would have to finish the regular season at 6-6. That is very doable. Let’s say the top 3 teams in the Big 12 are Kansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State and let’s suppose Texas loses all remaining games against those teams. That’s 4 games. And let’s say they win their remaining games against TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia (which are the bottom 3 of the Big 12). That’s also 4 games, which would make them 4-4 with games at OU, home and home with Baylor, and at Iowa State. Essentially 3 road games in which the Longhorns would need to steal one on the road. If they don’t, they would finish 9-9 in conference. That would be good enough to get in the NCAA tournament.

Great win for the Longhorns tonight.  #HOOKEM
