In what may be the final pregame press conference of the Mack Brown era, the embattled coach met with the media at the first speaking engagement for the Valero Alamo Bowl, where the unranked Texas Longhorns will face the 10th ranked Oregon Ducks of the Pacific 12 Conference.
Not much toward Brown’s job status or his expected, if not demanded, resignation other than being adamant he would meet with UT President Bill Powers and new Athletic Director Steve Patterson.
Brown said he excited to be back, saying there was no better city that is great to the Longhorns than San Antonio. He said “you always want to be challenged in a bowl gameâ€, and Oregon a “BCS type†team.
Brown did address his job status further, saying he would not talk about him or his future, and mentioning when your AD changes that “changes the gameâ€.
Brown said playing Oregon “perked†up the team, and they were “lucky†to have drawn one of the best teams in the country.
Brown noted “you always worry†when you lose your last game about losing your edge playing in a bowl.
While talking about how good Oregon was [The “best team in the country†type description we’ve became familiar with through the years] Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich turned to Brown and said “Wow. You’re really good at this.â€
Brown said he had a soft spot for the seniors saying “Nobody’s put up with anymore stuff than this teamâ€.
Of Note: After the presser had ended, prominent UT Booster Red McCombs began fielding questions. Though he did “campaign for Mack†so to speak, he did say the school could get Nick Saban.
“There’s no question. All the money that’s not under the Vatican is at UT.”
