Greg Robinson, former Texas co-defensive coordinator (2004), has joined the Player Personnel department at the University of Texas under new director Patrick Suddes.  Robinson makes his way back to the 40 Acres after stints at Syracuse and Michigan, where he served as head coach and defensive coordinator, respectively.

“I’m thrilled to have Greg Robinson back with our staff,” said Texas head football coach Mack Brown. “He absolutely loves the game of football, has such a wealth of knowledge and experience and will be an invaluable resource to our staff. Greg is such a passionate, hard-working, competitive and determined man that you know he’ll bring a great deal to this position.”

According to head coach Mack Brown, Robinson’s responsibilities will include quality control and scouting for the Longhorns.

Will Greg Robinson’s hiring have an impact on the future success of the Longhorns? Probably not but it certainly won’t hurt. Robinson won’t be on the field but will be contributing behind the scenes. Given his less than stellar record as head coach at Syracuse (10-37) and porous defensive statistics while serving as defensive coordinator at Michigan for two seasons under Rich Rodriguez, this is a good thing.  That being said, Robinson has a great football mind.  Couple that with the fact that most of the athletic staff are already comfortable and familiar with Robinson makes the hiring a win-win.

As co-defensive coordinator in 2004 Robinson helped lead Texas to an 11-1 season which was capped off by a win over 12th ranked Michigan in the Rose Bowl.   In 2011 Athlon Sports named Greg Robinson’s tenure at Syracuse the 5th worst in college football since 1960.
