The Tight End position… It has been a point of contention at Texas over the last handful of years.  Belton TE Durham Smythe was supposed to be a big grab in the 2013 class, then he decommitted and pledged to Notre Dame.  Texas instead signed JUCO player Geoff Swaim as the lone tight end in the class.  The Longhorns have not received a commitment from a tight end in the 2014 class and have not done much to recruit one.  The optimism when it comes to the TE position is nonexistent for most Texas fans….

Enter Garrett Gray, a 2014 wide receiver from Marble Falls.  Gray has all the skills – speed, talent and heart… but should be considered a “tweener” at the receiver position.  He’s fast and has great hands and blocks well.  Hence the receiver/ tight end recruitment at Texas.  His frame can handle substantial more weight, which is why UT thinks he can potentially handle the load at the TE position and contribute.  The day after attending UT’s minicamp, Gray chose Texas over a handful of schools including UCLA, Cal, Houston, Minnesota, Oregon State, Rice, SMU, Texas State and others. Gray is 6-5, 205 lbs. and has a ton of upside but should be considered a “project” at the tight end position.  He is a 3-star recruit that won’t make a living as a wideout in college but could make a fortune as a Tight End.  He just needs to gain a little more weight to play the part.

While the tight end position stigma at UT seems to live on, a Kingslayer at the position is sure to come eventually.  Could Garrett Gray be the guy?  Absolutely…

A little film on Gray and his recruiting:
