As first reported by Orangebloods.com, Texas quarterback David Ash has apparently suffered a hamstring injury in practice today.  The severity of the injury to Ash is not yet known, which makes the quarterback situation at Texas even more precarious than it already was.  From all performance indications from practice and drills,  Ash was on target to be the starting quarterback when the Longhorns take on Wyoming in the team’s season opener on September 1st, with junior quarterback Case McCoy continuing to compete against him for playing time.  Hamstring injuries can be minor to severe, with the latter potentially taking many months to heal completely.  True freshman Connor Brewer enrolled early at the University of Texas and played well in the spring game, but he was more than likely slated to red-shirt this season.  The Longhorns also have another true freshman quarterback arriving in camp next week in the form of Tatum High School’s dual-threat athlete Jalen Overstreet.

As more information unfolds about Ash’s injury the coaching staff will be better prepared to make decisions about how to proceed at the quarterback position for the 2012 season.  Any time that Ash misses in camp is certain to give Junior Case McCoy a leg-up on grabbing the starting role however.
