On Monday afternoon, Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesmen reported that Deloss Dodds will announce that he is officially stepping down in August of 2014. This is similar to a report that Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com made on September 13th. Regardless of when Deloss Dodds decided to step down, it looks like that there will be a change in the front office in Bellmont Hall. That can only mean 1 thing.

Mack Brown has no friends left.

Mack Brown resurrected a Texas Longhorns program that was dormant on the national stage for much of the 1980s and 1990s. He came into Austin and had immediate success. He had doubters and skeptics but he was able to win the 2005 national championship, win 3 BCS bowls and win 2 conference titles. He won 10 or more games for 9 consecutive seasons. Alabama under Nick Saban has won 10 or more games for only 5 consecutive seasons. He help built Texas into the enormous brand it is today.

However, times change and so does the ability to do the job.

Since 2010, Mack Brown has only finished ranked once, which was 19th last year. Brown has gone 12-15 in conference play and has been blown out numerous times.

The past two days have been especially bad for Mack Brown. Early Sunday morning, USC fired head coach Lane Kiffen and left him at LAX.  Lane Kiffin since 2010 had a better record overall and in the Pac 12 than Mack Brown did overall and in the Big 12. Lane Kiffin also had a win over a top 5 Oregon in 2011, something Mack Brown hasn’t done in the last 4 seasons. USC thought that was not up to their standards. Then on late Sunday afternoon, Earl Campbell said that it was time for Mack Brown to go.

Even beating Oklahoma won’t save Mack Brown at this point. The athletic director opening at Texas will get the best person for the job in Austin. He won’t buy into Mack Brown’s politics and will look at the results and hire his guy.

Mack Brown is a great person. You can see on many college football shows that everyone that has been around him likes him and doesn’t wish ill will toward him. However, they also understand that getting blown out to BYU is not the Texas Standard. I am not the biggest Mack Brown supporter but I want him to be recognized for the good things he has done for this program. I don’t want him to be hated by the Longhorns faithful and every week that passes that Texas A&M keeps winning and Texas keeps struggling will affect his legacy at Texas. He must step aside to keep his legacy intact because as of now, he has no friends.
