A day after the men’s basketball team lost to Cincinnati, Gail Goestenkors and the women’s basketball team were ousted in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. Today it was at the hands of a hard-nosed West Virginia team. Texas scored just 18 first half points to the Mountaineers’ 31. It was eerily similar to the men’s game yesterday in which the Longhorns scored only 17 first-half points.
In the second half the Longhorns shot better and were able to cut the West Virginia lead to 51-48 at the 5:40 mark. Unfortunately the effort was not enough to match West Virginia’s 48% shooting for the game which was more than enough to seal the West Virginia victory. Ashley Gayle led Texas with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Taylor Palmer led the Mountaineers with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
Texas says goodbye to 3 senior starters, Ashley Gayle, Yvonne Anderson and Ashleigh Fontenette.
