University of Utah transfer punter Jack Bouwmeester has committed to the Texas Longhorns after taking a visit to the 40 Acres yesterday. The senior punter from Bendigo, Australia startered all 39 games for the Utes over the past three seasons after transferring from Michigan State.
Bouwmeester is a two-time all conference selection and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award last season. He averaged 44.7 yards per punt this season and had 13 punts that traveled fifty yards or more. His long punt on the season was 62 yards.
The Longhorns struggled in the punting game this season, with freshman Michael Kern handling punt duties. Kern averaged 40.5 yards per punt and had just two travel 50+ yards with a long of 52 yards.
Improved special teams play, particularly in the kicking and punting game, are a priority for the Longhorns. Bouwmeester joining the program should pay dividends.
