Talking Texas with Troy Omeire after flip from Texas A&M

Just when we thought the drama of the 2020 recruiting class was beginning to draw to a close, four-star wide receiver Troy Omeire sent Texas fans into a frenzy when he suddenly flipped his commitment from Texas A&M to the Longhorns.

Omeire, a 6’3″ 210-pound star wide receiver for Fort Bend Austin, is coming off of an impressive junior season that saw him notch his second consecutive first-team all-district selection behind 46 receptions, 804 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns.

After initially committing to Texas A&M over the summer, Omeire said that Texas was always in the back of his mind and that it felt right to pull the trigger last week.

“I was actually going to go to Texas at first, but my mom had liked A&M,” Omeire said after Austin’s 27-16 win over Fort Bend Dulles on Thursday night. “I’m a momma’s boy, so I made that decision with her.”

However, after much deliberation in his household, it became more evident that Texas was the right place for him over the course of the last few weeks.

“I feel like I can start over there. It’s better for me and my mom, because I feel like I can make it to the league there rather than at A&M. My mom confirmed with me that Texas was the right place, so I flipped.”

In his first game as a Texas commit, Omeire had an impressive 37-yard score in front of coach Tom Herman and wide receivers coach Corby Meekins who were taking in the game on the sidelines.

“[Herman] came to a game last year against Clemens and it made me feel so special, and then he came again tonight so I just had to ball out.”

For how Omeire will fit on the team, the four-star is excited to play in an offensive system that will benefit him in the long run and get him touches early on.

“They sling the ball over there man, I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Omeire became the 20th commit in a stacked 2020 class for the Longhorns and the second receiver along with Temple’s four-star Quentin Johnston. His commitment boosted Texas to 5th in 247Sports’ national rankings of 2020 recruiting classes.

Of the targets left on the board, Coach Meekins has a shot at landing a third wideout in 2020 in Junipero Serra’s (Cali.) LV Bunkley-Shelton as the four-star included Texas in his top six released on Thursday along with Nebraska, Arizona State, USC, Washington, and Michigan.
