Texas Baseball leaves Austin for the first time this season, as they head to Daikin Park in Houston for the Bruce Bolt College Classic. The Longhorns will be the highest ranked team participating in the Classic, however the competition level takes a major step up. No. 3 Texas will play No. 9 Coastal Carolina on Friday. The Chanticleers have dealt with a rash of injuries early on to their pitching staff, and they will be without ace Cameron Flukey, who played a major role in their run to the College World Series finals last season. Last season Flukey had an 8-2 record with just a 3.19 ERA.
Despite the injuries, Coastal Carolina will serve as the best team Texas has played in their early 2026 campaign. In their eight games played to-date, Coastal Carolina is averaging nearly seven runs a game. On the flip side, Jim Schlossnagle’s team is giving up less than two runs a game and currently haven’t given up a run in their last 22 innings. Coastal Carolina will need to win a high scoring game, and Texas will be looking to dominate with pitching. Senior Ruger Riojas will look to continue his impressive start to the season, as he has given up just two runs across his first two starts in 2026 to go along with 19 strikeouts and only 2 walks.
Can the Texas Offense Heat Up?
The Texas pitching staff is doing more than their fair share so far in 2026. Last weekend, a good Michigan State team scored just two runs all weekend. That is impressive, as the Spartans scored 18 runs across three games against Louisville the previous weekend. There is no question that if the Longhorn pitching staff stays healthy, this team will go far. How far exactly will likely be determined by the help the offense can provide.
Against Michigan State the offense scored just 15 runs across the three games. Texas won all three, but that level of offense will find them losing games when SEC play starts. The top of the lineup is productive with Ethan Mendoza, Adrian Rodriguez, Aidan Robbins and Carson Tinney. Those four are as good as you will find on any team. It’s the players behind them that must produce. Jonah Williams made his season debut last weekend and instantly had an impact on the game. In the three games last weekend, Williams had three hits and two walks in his ten at bats. He adds protection to Carson Tinney, where teams simply cannot get away with walking him every time. Tinney had seven walks in the first three games of the season. If Williams can hit behind Tinney, it changes how opponents approach pitching to Tinney.
Will Luke Harrison Return to His 2025 Form?
There hasn’t been much to complain about when it comes to the starting pitching for Texas this year. The one item that stands out so far, would probably be that Saturday starter Luke Harrison has not been nearly as efficient as last year. In 2025 Harrison was a known commodity for Schloss and company, usually giving six or seven innings and three or fewer runs allowed. Through two starts in 2026 Harrison has made it through just 9.2 innings. Texas won both games, but Harrison needs to be more efficient or he will get beaten up in the SEC and potentially lose his weekend spot. Harrison doesn’t need to be spectacular, he just needs to get back to what he was doing in 2025.
Harrison will get the start Saturday versus old time rival Baylor. Baylor is far from the best offense Harrison will see in 2026, but they have some fire power. The Bears are led by Tyce Armstrong, who became the second player to ever hit a grand slam three times in a game. That was part of their 15-2 win over New Mexico State on February 13th. Through eight games Baylor is averaging over seven runs a game. If you are not on your game, Baylor has the ability to score in bunches. It presents an opportunity for Harrison to remind everyone what he’s capable of.
