According to the Inside Texas story on Tuesday morning, Texas Longhorns running back Jerrick Gibson has decided to leave the program and will make his move to the NCAA transfer portal. Gibson’s decision comes several days after logging a single carry for a running loss of –3 yards in the Longhorns’ 23-6 win against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl.

By entering the transfer portal, Gibson is able to retain his redshirt year. This provides him with more playing eligibility as he seeks a new program to call home. When he first arrived in Austin, Gibson, a Florida native, was one of the top running backs in the 2024 class. He arrived on the 40 Acres with high expectations, but found himself fighting to land a consistent role in a deep Texas backfield.

During his two seasons in Austin, Gibson carried the ball 114 times for 532 yards and five touchdowns, along with three receptions for 25 receiving yards. His first season in 2024 was very promising as he rushed for for 377 yards and four touchdowns on 78 carries. Opportunities disappeared in 2025, due to Quintrevion Wisner, Christian Clark and James Simon being the primary contributors in Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

Competition for playing time, as well as limited snaps (likely due to issues with fumbling), led Gibson to conclude that his future is no longer in Austin. Despite his departure, Gibson remains a talented and versatile back and should easily find a new program where he can earn more carries and showcase the potential that made him a highly recruited running back out of high school.
