Believe it or not, the now unranked Texas Longhorns still have a game to play this weekend, against the #25 Ole Miss Rebels (2-0). When most of us saw the Rebels last, they were winning a thriller against Vanderbilt on the opening night of college football. Â In last year’s meeting in Oxford, Texas won 66-31, but it’s a new year, and Rebels coach Hugh Freeze signed an outstanding recruiting class. Â How did the Rebels do on Saturday against SE Missouri State? Let’s check out the news and notes from the Rebels 31-13 win.
Ole Miss QB Bo Wallace went 8-15 188 yards and 2 TD’s in just about a half of work. His backup, Barry Brunetti, went 3-12 for 48 yards, but ran 18 times for 111 yards and a score (Sounds like Taysom Hill). Mississippi scored points on five consecutive first half drives, two being Wallace TD passes of over 60 yards.
In what could be trouble for a bad Texas defense, Rebels TE Evan Engram grabbed two passes for 70 yards, one being a 64 yard TD. With a lot of speed outside already, Texas will be hard pressed to deal with a who can do what Engram may be able to do. Denzel Nkemdiche did not play, but his back up Serderius Bryant had 15 tackles. Cody Prewitt, the hero of the Vanderbilt game, had another interception. Freshman WR Laquon Treadwell caught two passes for 27 yards and had one carry for seven yards in limited action.
Freeze called the dogs off after Mississippi had built a 31-0 halftime lead, but the stats are still telling. Ole Miss rang up 532 yards of total offense, including rushing 50 times for 272 yards.
In the first half, the Redhawks only crossed the Mississippi 50 once, and for the game were held to just 252 total yards, 93 coming on the ground on 41 carries.
The Rebels come to DKR Saturday Night with a 7 pm kickoff. The Longhorns are an early 4.5 point favorite.
