No. 3 Texas broke free with a strong 12-run streak at the end of the last three innings to secure a 14-4 run-rule victory over Lamar at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night. It was the Longhorns’ second run-rule win in just four games this season.
Texas led 8-4, after two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Longhorns summoned a dozen batters to the plate that inning and hit three extra-base hits to open the game.
Catcher Carson Tinney hit a solo home run in the sixth to extend the lead, and Texas earned another five runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. Maddox Monsour, left fielder, ended the offensive blast with a bases-clearing triple. Tinney led the Longhorns’ offense, taking his initial two home runs in burnt orange, safely reaching base four times and scoring three runs. The 116-mph homer of the Notre Dame transfer opened the floor for Texas’s scoring in the second, and his 423-foot shot in the sixth lifted the team up 9-4.
Third baseman Temo Becerra had a big impact on the game as well, reaching base four times, including a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Becerra hit an RBI earlier and scored his first multiple hit in burnt orange. Texas outhit Lamar, 13-6, and added six extra-base hits in the decisive win. In his collegiate debut, right-hander Sam Cozart (1-0) notched the win by pitching four innings, allowing one run, and striking out four. He relieved veteran starters Jason Flores and Ethan Walker, who pitched the first three innings.
Lamar’s reliever Joshua Shimmin (0-1) took the loss.
Texas is set to face Michigan State in a three game series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field.
