https://www.hornsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/kab.jpgMyck Kabongo WILL join the Texas basketball team on the court this season, after serving a 23 game suspension and repaying $475.00 to a charity of his choice. The adjusted penalty following the successful appeal by Kabongo and the University is certainly better than the NCAA’s original alternative of Kabongo being suspended the entire season, but appears to be more about the NCAA “flexing its muscles.” Violate the rules and we will give you a fair punishment. Lie or mislead us and we will give you an unfair punishment Sadly, the potential 10 game suspension rumor which was self-imposed by the University probably had a lot of merit to it until the NCAA learned that Kabongo had been less than forthcoming about the details. Read the NCAA’s statement here.
Kabongo’s eligibility kicks in for the Texas vs. Iowa State game on February 13, 2013, which is more than halfway through Big 12 play. Even with Kabongo missing a substantial part of the season he can still add tremendous value to this team’s chances of putting together a successful season.  Freshman Javan Felix is learning on the job and if Texas manages to muster up enough wins, and key wins for a tournament appearance, Kabongo’s presence couldn’t hurt. Felix is averaging 8.6 points per game and 6 assists – not bad for a true freshman point guard unexpectedly thrust into the starting role.  Last year Kabongo, as a true freshman averaged 9.6 points per game and 5.2 assists per game.  While the season is still young Rick Barnes must be thrilled with the play of Felix.
The Longhorns take the court again on Saturday against 20th ranked Michigan State in East Lansing.
