Mack Brown is probably not much of a social media junkie but he can thank Twitter, specifically some “twit in Topeka,Kansas,” for his recent contract extension at Texas. On Thursday the University of Texas Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Coach Brown through 2020. Mack’s contract ran through the 2016 season but after a swell of rumors over Brown’s job stability after two mediocre seasons, Texas wanted to show support for the national champion head coach. They did so in the form of a 4 year extension worth $5.2 million annually. Mack maintains the top spot for highest paid college coaches beating out Nick Saban and Les Miles. Brown’s critics have argued that securing the coach through 2020 is not ideal, particularly if Texas continues to struggle. A long-term contract could produce another “Muschamp-effect” where the program misses out on a potential option for replacing Brown if necessary prior to the contract’s expiration. Earlier this week DeLoss Dodds said Bryan Harsin and Manny Diaz will be given pay increases which should ease the notion that either will be going elsewhere in the next year or two.
