Rick Barnes’ team as a whole is young by all accounts and a very young starting five took the court tonight against the Chaminade Silverswords tonight in Maui. Freshmen Javan Felix, Ioannis Papapetrou and Prince Ibeh all started and sophmores Sheldon McClellan and Jonathan Holmes rounded out the starting five for the Longhorns.   Texas was beat early and often and the Longhorn’s leading scorer on the season, Sheldon McClellan, went nearly 32 minutes without scoring his first field goal. Point guard Javan Felix led the team in scoring with 17 points followed by Sheldon McClellan with 14 points. Jonathan Holmes dumped in 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the losing effort tonight. The Horns shot 46.4% from the field compared to the Silverswords’ 36.8, but Chaminade outperformed Texas from the 3-point line and the free-throw stripe. The story of the night was Chaminade’s DeAndre Haskins who scored a total of 32 points including 14 from the free throw line, and pulled in 9 rebounds in the win. Chaminade bench player freshman Kevin Hu followed Haskins’ performance with 16 points and 2 rebounds. The Longhorns continue play in the EA Sports Maui Invitational as they take on the winner of the USC/Illiinois game in the bracket.
