Lake Dallas (TX) cornerback Kobe Boyce is one of the fastest risers in the state of Texas. Virtually unknown following last season, Boyce saw his stock explode during the spring when word got out about him. Texas was on Boyce early, but they slow played him a bit to evaluate the DFW prospect. Texas did offer Boyce yesterday, and he wasted no time pulling the trigger for a commitment. Boyce chose the Longhorns over offers from Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Baylor, and Arkansas.
While the Longhorns try to re-establish the “DBU†brand, they are amassing talent in the secondary at an insane level. Boyce is one of the best athletes at the position in the state, and he’s also one of the few cornerbacks standing over six feet tall. Boyce is the first defensive back in the 2017 class, and the second defensive player to commit to Texas.
Film Analysis:
At 6’ 170, Boyce has ideal length and athleticism to stick at corner. Boyce is an incredibly smooth athlete with sticky coverage ability and great breaking speed. Boyce is technical with his footwork and he flips his hips as smoothly as any corner out there. Boyce has a high football IQ, and he’s an incredibly hard worker as he tries to hone his craft. He can play in several different coverage schemes, including man, zone, and press. Boyce has legit 4.4 speed which was timed on the laser at The Opening Dallas Regional camp. While he could stand to be more physical in his press technique, Boyce plays strong near the line of scrimmage, and he’s able to shed blocks and make plays behind the line with regularity. He will need to add some extra weight, but he’s more than capable of playing at his current weight at the high school level. Boyce should also factor on special teams where he could be a weapon on both return and coverage teams.
Final Verdict:
Boyce should really rise in the rankings this year, because his coverage and athletic ability are both where you expect to see them for talented corners. Boyce has a very high ceiling, that could include an all conference level multi year starter with a good chance to play professionally.
