It is Senior Day at Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium as the third-ranked Texas Longhorns (9-1, 5-1 SEC) host the Kentucky Wildcats (4-6, 1-6 SEC). Longhorn fans will pay homage to players that have exhausted their eligibility at the end of the season, while also saying goodbye to players that could leave the 40 Acres to pursue a career at the next level. It is an important moment for the fans, staff, players and their families, but there is still a game to be played on the turf. And today’s game is an important one to win if Texas intends on achieving their preseason goals.
Kentucky, on the other hand, has had a challenging season with a 4-6 record. They have an impressive win against Ole Miss in Oxford and will be looking to replicate that win and play spoiler to keep their bowl hopes alive. The Wildcat offense has struggled with turnovers, which could be a critical factor against an opportunistic Texas defense.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has battled injuries this season, will be a key player to watch, along with defensive standouts Alfred Collins and Colin Simmons who are emerging as forces on the defense. Ewers could very well be playing his last game at DKR as he will likely declare for the NFL Draft as most expect. For Kentucky, quarterback Brock Vandagriff will need to lead a mistake-free game to give the Wildcats a chance at pulling off the upset in a game in which they are underdogs by nearly three touchdowns.
A Kentucky loss knocks the Wildcats out of bowl contention, while a loss for the Longhorns likely erases hopes of an appearance in the College Football Playoff. The stakes are high and both teams need a win.
