The Texas Longhorns (7-1, 3-1) and Florida Gators (4-4, 2-3) will meet today for the first time since 1940 when they kickoff at 11:00 am at Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium. Texas holds a two game win streak against the Gators and an overall 2-0-1 record against head coach Billy Napier’s program.
The Longhorns are coming off a bye week, their second of the season, following a road win over No. 25 Vanderbilt. Florida is fresh off a home loss to Georgia last week, but kept things interesting and even led the Bulldogs at halftime.
Both programs are in need of their quarterbacks to step-up and make plays. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has thrown four interceptions in his last three games, and has looked less than polished following his return from injury last month. Gators quarterback DJ Lagway left the Georgia game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable for Napier. Should Lagway not play, Yale transfer Aidan Warner will get the nod under center for Florida. Warner threw for 66 yards and an interception in relief of the injured Lagway last week.
With four regular season games remaining for each team, wins are critical each week. Texas hopes to win out and secure a spot in the SEC Championship game, while Florida is hoping to secure enough wins this season to become bowl eligible (LSU, Ole Miss and Florida State are remaining games).
Today’s game will serve as the third matchup in Austin and the first played there since 1939.
