Lost in all of the Head Coach hoopla is the coordinators. They are just as (if not more in some cases) important as the Head Coach. Mack Brown did pretty darn well in 16 years without having to be an X's and O's guys because he was good at recruiting and had some pretty good coordinators to boot (and some turrible ones). These guys will play a huge role as well. If we were to get down to a guy like Jim Mora or Charlie Strong, pay attention to who they hire as OC and DC. That will give you a much clearer picture than the head man alone.

Completely agree. regardless if its a big name like Nick or someone like Briles/Mora. Assistant coaches will be huge and hopefully we will be able to get the best ones here.

With extra pocket change if we hire someone not named Saban, we should have quite a few options.

I agree! We will get a good coach, whether it fits our fans definition or not. However, the coordinators we hire will determine a lot.

I think one of the things with coordinators is whether the head coach is

1) able to pick out a good fit

2) able to delegate authority to those assistants to coach.

For example, one of the worries for me with Franklin is that I don't think he's a great x's and o's guy but he's someone who started on the offensive side. Let's say he were to hypothetically hire a guy like Chad Morris (or whatever hot OC you want). Would be willing to sublimate his ego to allow the coordinator free rein?

Mack is a good example of this. He didn't seem to meddle with the defense but it seems there were always reports of him interjecting his opinion into the offense, even when the coordinator was way ahead of him in terms of x's and o's.

I think it takes a very confident person to let go of that authority. You have to believe that you hired the right guy and also not be intimidated or concerned about them getting all the credit for the team's success.

I think a guy that is elite from an x's and o's standpoint will either be able to be involved in the offense/defense in a positive way and also have the knowledge to know when someone is the real deal instead of being completely dependent on other people's opinion (ala Diaz).
