Approximately $13 million Per DMN:

In his final year at Texas, Mack Brown was the second-highest paid coach in college football, making more than $5.4 million per year. Charlie Strong won’t make quite that much in his first season, however. He’s scheduled to earn $5 million in 2014.

That is still a hefty sum, but not a surprising one when you consider Strong’s job and everything involved with coaching at Texas.

The on-paper $5 million is actually a pretty light bill for Texas athletics in 2014 compared to what the Longhorns’ new head coach will actually cost next season. When Strong’s salary is added with the figures associated with his hiring and the buyout of Brown’s deal that number jumps to nearly $13 million.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

Charlie Strong’s salary in 2014 – $5 million

Money owed to Louisville for Strong’s buyout - $4.375 million

The buy-out of Brown’s contract, plus his yearly salary – $3.25 million

Cost of search firm for Texas during coaching search – $267K

Total – $12.892 million

And considering Strong’s perks and performance-based bonuses that number could easily climb into the $14 million range.

Texas earns more than any other athletic department in the country — $163 million in 2012 — but the Longhorns’ head coach will require at least 8 percent of that in 2014.
