I know college football for Texas just ended, but come on, man.

Ha, just giving you a hard time.

Lol. Interesting post here at HS.

I played club ball in Austin for over 15yrs. and follow the game closely.

The US men got completely screwed for this upcoming WC. If they can even get to to semis I'd consider it a win for US men's soccer.

If it were the US women-- they'd dominate absolutely.

Whenever you want to talk soccer, I'm here. I coached rec and assisted on a club team. One of my bucket list items is to go to London and watch a weekend of EPL games, especially Arsenal.

As for your question, USWNT should be a finalist again in the next WC. As for the USMNT, if they make it out of the group, would be a huge accomplishment. I really like where Klinnsman is taking the men's program. If they let him do his thing, I really think he can have the US in the top 10 by 2018.

I give you points for the change of pace here at HS. Hope the men's team can make it happen but my expectations are low. Kinsmann has been interesting.

No. Our group is brutal. If we survive, we will do incredibly well. But winning it al is still a ways off.

This will be the best team the US men have ever put out there, with a legit international coach also as opposed to a home grown pretender. But agree with Bfennell, that we got totally hosed in the grouping. To even make it out of this group will be a victory in itself, but, that being typed, if we do get out it means we could do something special.

For a March Madness analogy it is like finishing the year in the top 15 only to find yourself in the same regional with Kentucky, Michigan State and Butler.

Great post and insight. I started following soccer after the last world cup, and I can honestly say it was the best event I have ever watched on television.

Even better than football. The world cup is every 4 years and what it means to some of the teams make every game meaningful, can't wait to watch this year.

Though US is in a brutal group, the order of games is favorable. We open against Ghana, our best chance to gran three points. We then follow it with a match versus Portugal in the Amazon. The weather conditions and travel might call for a different lineup and fresh legs. I think US is the deeper team and might be comfortable just grabbing a point if we have beaten Ghana. We end versus Germany, who might already have six points in the bag. I'll be at the Portugal vs Germany game and be rooting the Germans to destroy Ronaldo and company.

US Soccer has improved immensely over the years, but we are still a long time away for being a WC champion contender. Jürgen Klinsmann and most of the players themselves have said winning is a ways away. We are in a rough group. It would be huge if we made it out of there. We have some good young talent, and if we can continue to develop that talent and adopt a more international style of play, the future is bright.

Part of the reason I was so mad that we lost out to Qatar for hosting the 2022 World Cup is that by then we have a good shot at a deep run. Getting out if this group would be a great achievement.

I am a huge soccer fan and played in HS. The US is playing the best soccer at the national team level that I can remember. They are now an attacking offensive minded team. They definitely got the toughest draw in the World Cup in the Group of Death. While tough I feel they have a chance of making it to the Quarterfinals, but there is zero chance they win the World Cup title. Should be a fun tournament to watch. I have a HS soccer buddy of mine who is going to the World Cup next year.
