Will Jerrod struggle against Okie St?

Jerrod had a great game last week , but now that a team has some film and they are able to scheme for his style of play , I am not looking for the same type of performance that we got from him last week.  I think the Cowboys will try to keep him in the box and make him beat us with his arm.  If our receivers are not able to make quick seperation from their coverage it could be a long game for us.  I would not be surprised to see the Cowboys just apply pressure without blitzing and giving Jerrod the opportunity to use his legs.  The other thing will Jerrod feel a little more pressure this week , and try to do to much which can cause turnovers and mistakes.  A lot to watch this weekend.

I hear what you're saying. I think a team can try to spy him or do whatever to contain him, but I think his game speed and elusiveness just can't be duplicated by another teams scout O. I do agree that if they commit to trying to make him stay in the pocket by keeping 8 guys in the box, then Burt, Foreman, and both Johnson's could have a big day.

Jerrod doesn't strike me as the kind of Quarterback that can simply be taken care of by reviewing film. Too much of his game is off the cuff based on what the defense throws at him.  If anything, I expect Heard to look better this weekend. He very likely won't have the same stats, as his stats last week were insane. But I expect him to look even more polished as he has had another week to work with the first team offense. Remember, they're game planning for Heard. But Heard is game planning for them as well.

the defense shows up and plays inspired Football

There will ups and downs with Heard as he gains experience. He did have 2 turnovers against Cal. I feel our whole offense will continue to develope.

That being said, he does some things you can't teach. While he probably won't have a game like Cal, he will make plays.

More important question is how we will play on defense IMHO.

I can see Jerrod having his ups and downs in the passing game since this is only his third game. His running is another story.

If I'm okie lite I do everything I can to make somebody else beat me. And I have no clue who that guy for us would be.

Heard is going to have negative plays but as teams try to take away his explosive plays, the offense can exploit the voids in the defense with plenty of speed in Heard, Armanti, Daje, & Burt. suddenly Texas can create mismatches in passing game that has been missing.

A lot of what Jerrod does his unplanned. A play starts off designed for a specific objective. It stalls, Heard improvises and suddenly you're defending something completely different.

If I were having to defend this, I'd replace a LB with a DB and have him shadow everything Heard does. PD says that was done but if it was, I couldn't tell. lol I would also use my two fastest guys at DE and LB. And I'd be able to do that since Texas' OL hasn't really shown the ability to push anyone around.

I agree that Heard does some things with his legs that just cannot be duplicated when a team tries to prepare for his style of play. It will be interesting to see how Okie lite defends him . With that said if our O-Line can create some running lanes for our backs this whole conversation will be moot!  I hope our offense moves at a fast pace , do not let Okie lite substitute and when Heard does improvise with his feet it will make their defense even more tired which will be very evident in the 4th Quarter.

Pressure with four, spy with 2...cover with 5.....on passing downs especially. Our OL will be key.

We have to be able to protect if they bring four or even five.

Heard will be fine, but we can't expect any thing close to last week's performance.

Cal has no where close to the athleticism OSU has on defense. Don't expect too many long runs.

Winning will depend on our DL ( specifically our DTs )...That doesn't bode well for us.

We should be able to keep them under 69 points. Surely we are better than UTSA.

Hope for a win, but would guess a 38-24 loss ......

I think of this as a game between OSU's front 4 and Heard's ability to pass.  Can OSU and Ogbah put pressure on Heard while at the same time playing contain principles?  If so, the passing game AND Heard scramble game are in trouble.  If OSU can only contain and not put pressure on Heard, Heard's passing will determine the offense's production.  If OSU goes full tilt pass rush, Heard's scramble game is engaged.  It will be fun to watch, I hope.

I don't know a lot in this world, but I do know that as a coach it was a lot easier to game plan against a two-dimensional offense (passing or handing off to the RB) than it was against a triple threat offense.  It's just a variable that you have to spend time and resources on.  By doing that, it weakens the other areas of your defense.  Texas with Tyrone at the helm was much easier to game plan against especially for LBs.  Bottom line, OkSt is spending a lot of time and resources trying to develop a plan and it will weaken other areas.  Do the Longhorns have enough to take advantage….I guess we will see.

IMO, There are a lot of running Qb's out there, but Heard appears to have an intangible that some don't have (Marcus Mariotta is a recent QB that comes to mind who had it).  Heard can throw the football.  Vince Young was a decent passer later in his college career, but Heard looks like he can make all the throws a top-level QB can make. Granted it's only been two games. Pair that with his running ability and that’s a dangerous combination.  I’m not saying Heard is better than Young, but I think he is further along than Young was at this same time in college.  It remains to be seen if Heard has the mental makeup of Young, Mariotta, or McCoy, but he appears have the physical capability. We need more of a sample size to make an accurate assessment, but what I’ve seen so far sure has me excited as a Longhorn fan.  I agree with what Trent Dilfer said in 2012, if Jerrod Heard is used the right way and in the right system, he can win the Heisman.

He will only struggle if he tries to force things. Take what they give you and wear them out.

If I were OK Lite, I'd force Texas to run the ball. That means playing the pass and keeping everything in front of you. Texas hasn't shown it can really run the ball, other than Heard scrambling. Rush 3 and play 8 back. This should keep Heard's rushing yardage down and limit the number of big plays by Texas.

From a defensive stand point, rushing three can create wider lanes for a scrambler. At times late in the game Cal only rushed two and Heard ate them up. You also have to work within the framework of your defense. If blitzing is your bread and butter you probably aren't very good at playing "coverage" and vise versa. I'm Interested to see what they do. Also interested in seeing what Norvell comes up with.

In the end though, it comes down to blocking and tackling. That never changes.
