I spoke to a good friend of mine who was an all conference OL under Wickline at OSU to get his thoughts. This guy did nothing but rave about him as a coach. He said that they had their rough patches, but at the end of the day he was an excellent motivator and teacher of the position.
My friend wasn't highly recruited by any means coming out of HS here in TX. However, Wickline is not only a great evaluator of talent, but excellent coach which was demonstrated by turning my 2-3 star friend into 1st team all conference lineman in the Big XII.
Now getting into the OL position at Texas... He told me that he knows that Strong is his "boy" due to stories he had heard of their time together as coaches. So this does affirm what others have said about them having a history. I asked him if he thought he would consider a position at Texas under his "Boy" and these were his thoughts:
"Well, going back to when McWhorter was let go from Texas, UT approached Wick with a Mighty fine offer and he didn't take that then for what it's worth. He was making 275ish or so and they definitely offered him an increase. I think he would go to Florida his alma-mater or maybe the NFL but he has been with Gundy since he started there at OSU I think."
So you are saying there isn't a chance that he'd come to Texas due to his loyalty to OSU?
"Hell, there is always a chance... I mean, Texas has a TON of money so you never know. He does have a Strong relationship with Coach Strong so I would never say never on that."
TLDR version - From a former player, great motivator, evaluator, and coach. Didn't shut down the idea that he would never come to Texas, and confirmed the relationship with Coach Strong as being extremely positive.
