Why did it take so long to put Heard on the field ?

Who ever was behind keeping him playing behind Swoops, needs to be replaced next season.

I have lost a lot of respect of the coach or coaches behind keeping Swoops in front of Heard for as long as they did, that includes Charlie Strong !

You ask a legitimate question. Texas coaches have been the butt of jokes from the national media because of the misses on players like Robert Griffin, Johnny Manziel and Drew Brees. It is inexplicable the gaffe made by not giving Jerrod Heard the slightest look at starting at quarterback. Shawn Watson's job should be reevaluated immediately.

It's clear now that Watson was too emotionally and schematically invested in Swoopes, he rigged the QB competition accordingly (subconsciously, not as part of a nefarious plot to take down Texas football) and he completely lost sight of the forest for the trees.  Strong realized that, made the correct change and there's little use in dwelling on it anymore.

During his Freshman year, it's unlikely Heard was physically ready to play. I'm not talking about skill level, simply size and strength. I don't know how much weight and muscle mass he gained during his freshman year, but I would think that he is substantially stronger.

Not playing him last year was the right move and saving the redshirt.  This year, in reality it was one game he missed.  Shoulda coulda woulda...you'll drive yourself crazy wondering about the past.  Enjoy the future and quit looking for blame.

The plan was to redshirt him baring an emergency. However if they really were waiting just 1 game, why demote Watson?

oh I don't think the plan was to start Seoopes one game and bring JH in.
It's fair to criticize Charlie for sticking with Watson and heard thru spring and fall. But he also gets credit for pulling the trigger on both after just one game.

He RS last season and he played a few plays in the first game. He started the Rice and Cal game. How much quicker could he have been put in?

I'm good with him redshirting last year. I would have liked him to have started the Notre Dame game.
