Which QB starts next week?

Assuming QE is out for a week or more, who is Sark going to call on to start at QB? Obviously MM has been getting QB2 snaps so far, but apparently Manning was also taking second string snaps this week. I'm sure he'd love to redshirt Manning, but may not have the option.

Who's it going to be all you armchair head coaches?

My initial reaction is it's going to be based on Ewers' diagnosis and how long he's out, but it's a real interesting situation regardless.

- Manning's redshirt status doesn't matter if we're all working with the idea that he's a three-year player anyway
- I could be waaaaay off and it's possible Murphy deserves the start, but my personal opinion has always been that Manning will be the guy next year and Sark knows that deep down, so he may decide to make the call for Manning to get him game experience if Ewers is out for several weeks
- if the prognosis is good and it's one or two games, Sark may roll with Murphy to test the waters and go from there with a thought in the back of his mind that he doesn't want Murphy leaving before spring training next year
- most importantly, it won't matter who Sark puts out there if he's going to call game the way he did today and play not to lose because he's fearful a young QB may make mistakes

Basically, I don't know as I think it's a really tough call with several factors to consider.

This isn't how Sark and his staff wanted to get Manning thrown to the wolves in the middle of the march to a Natty...remember Garrett Gilbert...IMO he goes with Maalik unless he is just God awful (which I doubt) we will see a whole different play set for MM, I expect we ground and pound with Brooks and Baxter, and MM throws will be limited, we know he has a cannon

one thing is not like the other. Gilbert had to come into a game without notice or preparation....and a Title at that. If and when Manning enters a game it will not be nearly as much pressure as Gilbert was under.

I respectfully disagree Arch is the Golden Child, he was national pick of the litter, he is a legacy and he is ours, yes the game itself was different, but I am hoping we dont find out, and that Maalik surprises everyone

There's five games left + the CCG and a bowl so Manning can play four and not burn his shirt. If Sark doesn't turtle again and force Ewers or MM to play the whole game.

If the commentators on yesterday's game are to be believed, Arch has been getting reps with the 2s for the last few weeks. If true, I expect MM to get the start but for Sark to have a couple packages for Arch to get a few reps and get used to the speed of the game. If things go poorly, then all bets are off and we may be running the wildcat with Red for much of the game. Either way, BYU will likely stack the box and force the young QBs to beat them.

Assuming Arch starts he will have the benefit of practicing and getting meaningful game reps during the regular season. Gilbert was thrust into the Natty without preparation. Two different scenarios.

Starting MM and giving Arch some action seems like the most plausible approach to me.

IF Arch starts that means we are in big trouble, assuming QE is out for an unspecified time , it also means either Sark has lost confidence in MM or MM gets hurt....Maalik is no walk on, they recruited him, he's no QE but then nobody is..I read a tweet this morning which said "..when Maalik throws , it looks like he is trying to bring down a deer "

Yes. Maalik needs to learn to take some steam off the ball and put some touch on it so it will be more catchable. Those bullets he throws have to be placed in exactly the right spot or the receiver can't adjust in time.

I hope they both get good reps with the 1s and let the better QB start. However, if Sark starts Arch to prepare for next year, I will be highly pissed. We still have a chance at the CCG and beyond. Opportunities like that don't come often. Play for this year and next year will have it's time.

According to TFB, Murphy was injured/banged up in practice last week. Their sources were surprised that Murphy was able to play Saturday. They said if the game had gone longer, Arch likely would have seen action.

Ok all this talk about Arch and I get it BUT isn't Wright actually 3rd? If MM can't go won't he actually be the pick? I'll hang up and listen

I would start Murphy against BYU. BYU has a terrible offense so, IMO, it's not going to take much offense to match their output. If the Horns D cant hold BYU under 21 points, then PK should be fired and Fatterson promoted.

Even though Arch is likely only going to be here 3 yrs, dont waste a non-redshirt game on an almost certain win. His expectation as to redshirt this year. If Murphy is ineffective or gets hurt, then all things are on the table

When Malik went in it was mostly un expected. Granted in an ideal world the #2 guy should do whatever it takes to be ready when called on. My guess is that Sark wanted to keep it stupid simple for Malik, given the situation.

As far as Malik's velocity on the ball. I don't buy that he only throws fast balls. Obviously some situations call for that, some don't. He has been coached at a high level for long enough to understand and hopefully master that aspect of the game.

Hopefully with Malik getting most of the #1 team snaps this week, Malik and Sark will feel comfortable opening up the play book way more then what we saw yesterday.
