Another year, another rout

48-10   50-7 and 31-9

Those figures represent the results of the head to head match ups between the 2 contrasting head coaches who met on the field of DKR stadium.   Gary Patterson came to Austin with his worst (by far) team in 10 years and it was still enough to out-coach, out-prepare out-scheme and out-adjust our staff.   Oh yeah, Gary’s got a “young†team too and a team without as much talent as the Horns.   Didn’t matter, another year, same result, rinse wash repeat.   It’s official, TEXAS lost to every team with a pulse on the schedule and 2 without pulses (Cal & Kansas).   In fact the ONLY team going bowling TEXAS would beat this year was a putrid Baylor team.   We would also lose to cellar dweller’s Cal and Kansas.

Time to move on, Cheap Seats was at the very front of the Charlie Flacking Strong!!!!!!!! Bandwagon 3 years ago. . . . end of last year the Cheap Seats was looking for a new seats, today it’s Flacking Charlie Strong.  Good man, did some great things off the field at TEXAS but he is the ONLY HC in TEXAS football history to have 3 straight losing seasons.   He will also leave as the worst (in terms of W/L %) coach in TEXAS history.   His biggest failing, his inability to hire top flight assistants.  More than anything else, this was CFS’ downfall.

The question now is whether TEXAS continues to support mediocrity or whether it is bold and goes and hires the hottest young coach in college football today.  This a discussion way beyond the pay grade of the Cheap Seats so let’s start the post-mortem on a season that truly sucked.   Well except that 1st game, now that was a thing of beauty that exposed Norte Dame as a complete fraud.   Outside of beating the dirt burglers . . .nothing better than putting a dagger in ND’s heart.  And make no mistake; we really think the loss to TEXAS took the starch out of the Domers this year.   That and they actually are not that good . . .but then neither were we.   Sucks that for the 2nd year in a row, TEXAS’ season ended in Nov.

Edit:  It appears overnight that the mediocrity question has been answered and everything has lined up for Tom Herman to be our next head coach.  Ed O has been hired as the LSU Head man and we think that is a GREAT fit for the Tigers.  Now the big question, who does Tom surround himself with at TEXAS, most importantly who will be his DC and defensive staff.

Let’s open with the good from the game and season.

Stop me if you’ve heard this, D’Onte Foreman is A BEAST.   31 carries 165 yards.   Face it, he was the TEXAS offense this year.  2000+ yards, 3rd best total for a BigXII RB in history.  Not really a 2nd place this year for Team MVP.  All this behind a run game scheme which amounted to “hey D’Onte . ..break tacklesâ€.  . .this year.   Sadly, I fear we’ve seen the last of the younger Foreman. . .his next carry is likely in the NFL unless Herman can pull off a Mack Brown and convenience him to stay.  Money or a Heisman?

Need to give props to TEXAS’ first Ray Guy finalist, our thunder from down under, Michael Dickson.  #4 nationally as a punter (pre TCU), he constantly flipped field position and was a huge aid to our defense.  Not to mention about the only highlight of our special teams.

Nothing read on the internet should be a surprise but amazing to hear criticism of Shane Buchelle.  Kid was asked to do way too much in an offense that started out like gang busters and seem to get less and less creative with each game TEXAS played.   Is it really that hard to call a jet sweep considering WRs like Heard, Duverney and Warrick?   To do something to keep the other team off balance.  Cheap Seats was STUNNED but excited to see a pass over the middle to the TE.  It went for 20 yards. .  . .no reason to go back to that well.    Can only imagine that Tom Herman is chomping at the bit to coach the talent at TEXAS.  Cannot wait to see a real D1 offense and play calling.

After D’Onte Foreman, the biggest positive we saw this year was the improvement of the defense.  Talent is certainly there though would love another star DT or two.  Think this D just needs to be coached up in a scheme that fits their talents.

Ranking the BigXII, pre Bedlam

#1 OU   Heading for the Sugar bowl most likely

#2  OSU   Sugar bowl bound if they can pull off the upset.  Just don’t think they have the offense to keep up but a few turnovers and the Mullet is the bigXII champ.

#3  WVU   Better than most realize but a step below

#4  KSU  Snyder does more with less than any coach in the nation

#5  TCU   In hindsight, we should have hired Patterson, the man can coach

From here, it’s pretty much who cares.

#6   Texas Tech . . .only because they beat Rape U at their own game

#7   Baylor. . .only because they go bowling thanks to playing an out of conference schedule of tomato cans

#8  TEXAS though I considered putting Kansas here because of their win

#9  ISU because they beat KU

#10  KU   Rock Chalk thank goodness for basketball

Cheese,

Spot on as usual....

Thanks for taking the time for the "Cheap Seats" assessments. Really well done and always look forward to them each week. Hope for a return encore next season.
