SIGNATURE WIN
Charlie Strong and the TEXAS Longhorns just beat Top 10 Ranked BLow U heads up. The single biggest win of CFS' tenure at TEXAS . . .so far. And he did it by having this team answer pretty much every question tossed at the team this week. Shut down the run. . .CHECK Lean on your running backs and young, dynamic QB. . .CHECK Play quality fundamental football. . . .check Out Coach an opponent. .. .Check Win the turnover battle . .. .Check Win a game in the 4th quarter . . .check
Nothing sweeter than winning the Red River War . .. .well unless it's continuing a trend, when TEXAS is unranked coming into the RRW and the visitors from up north are ranked. . . .TEXAS is now 6-2. And in one game we ended blow u's playoff hopes and Mayfield's dark horse Heisman bid. Not sure if a team has ever won the RRW without leading in rushing. .. but it doesn't happen very often (like less than 0.05% of the time). TEXAS did win the turnover battle 1-0 but OU won the field position battle by a pretty good margin. Was worried that would hurt us late. But at the end of the day . .. . watching the team "crowd surf" CFS felt really freaking good. Can we now put to bed the idea of replacing charlie? This was no "cheap win". . .this was TEXAS beating OU physically and winning both sides of the LOS.
Speaking of which. ..how huge is this win? Since everyone else picked us to lose (check our OB ESPN College Pick'em. . .I had TEXAS winning) . . .we now need to go 4-2 the rest of the way to go bowling, something most had written off already. And who else wondered when TEXAS gave up 4th and 8 . .then allowed OU to pull within 7. . . .oh shit, here we go again. We have our Bye week this week . ..then we play KSU at home, a good team but bye comes at a good time. Then we have @ISU, Kansas, @WVU TT and @ Baylor. We play like we did today. . .we can go 5-1 vs that group. We play like we did vs TCU. . . we'll be home for the holidays. This win made it possible. . . of course giving away both Cal and OSU. . . still hurts. #LetsRide
Going to start by talking about the front 7 since the Cheap Seats has been pretty hard on the D this season. They hassled, confused and frustrated a powerful land thief offense from the opening kickoff. Bobby's boys came in ranked #9 in Scoring offense 42 points per game and #11 in Total Offense with 521. They would score 17 and only gain 278. And this is with 2 plays that easily could have been called fumbles which weren't. TEXAS held the dirt burglars to only 3 of 12 on 3rd downs and registered 5 sacks (by my count, have not seen the official number). Perhaps no bigger sack than 3rd and 14 with 2:50 left in the game. Stoops' kids had gotten back within 7 points . . .and TEXAS was without Hassan Ridgeway who played a whale of a game. Why was this huge? Only moments before, 4th and 11 and Mayfield scrambled for 12 to sustain a drive that made it a one score game.
Credit to Vance Bedford, CFS and most of all the players. This game was the opposite of TCU. . .and frankly every other game this year. The D was STRONG .. . it dictated the pace of the game. They won the line of scrimmage. And VB was calling plays that confused Mayfield, frankly one of the top 3 QBs in the BigXII. Only hope that Ridgeway is back soon. Poona Ford. . .take a bow. You were my defensive player of the game. Malik Jefferson is going to be a big time stud for us, he was all over the field. Nashaan Hughes also had an excellent game as did the entire front 7 (or 6 or 5. .we used some different fronts). This is how you protect a young secondary. Alas, it was not all good. We saw John Bonney, Duke Thomas and Dylan Haines all make mistakes and get beat leading to OU's 2 TDs. Hope our young DBs grow up quick.
Let's talk about the offense and the big ugglies up front. By far their best performance of the year. While they struggled at times in pass protection, their blocking in the run game was the difference in the outcome. TEXAS would rush for 313 yards almost doubling their 171 ypg/#71 in the nation ranking. Norvell kept the sooner D off balance with misdirection combined with Jerrod Heard's best performance since the Cal game. Now I will say, the Cheap Seats is not a fan of the QB Sweep play but even though OU tried to steal a page from TCU's scheme of Heard, they could not match the horny toad's production. If we are going to talk about blocking. . . we cannot leave the WRs out of this. Their ability to execute down field blocks were critical to big play success. And props to Lorenzo Joe for getting on what would be ruled a fumble in the end zone upon further review. Joe had a great day blocking. Gray had his best day of the year and GREAT run by Marcus Johnson to go with some CRITICAL pass catches including 2 on 3rd downs to move the chains. BTW, technically MJ's TD was a "reception" but that's more a pitch sweep than a true pass. I actually had a conversation with Marty Akins and DKR as to why a pitch forward was a pass but a pitch backward was a "hand off". . . . .
Mack let me down
Half time I'm listening to Mack who is classy as usual and talking about how much he hated going into Manhatten. .. so they ask him was their any place he liked to go . .. . .and instead of putting a fork in the bugeating huskers (their mascot was once a "bugeater") and saying "Yeah, I kinda owned Lincoln". . . .he passed as said he liked playing in Austin.
Come on Mack. . . you get to take shots . .especially when you earned them. Still pissed he didn't call time out with :01 on the clock our last trip up there to give them the finger on their way to the B1G.
Week off, hope we continue to add to the passing game, even a short passing game. Extra week for Ridgeway to heal. Now is the time to capitalize on success, to turn this season around. Said pre-season that you want to catch TEXAS early not late this year. . .let's see if CFS & company can make me Nostradamus. If Jerrod Heard can grow as a passer, this will be an offense teams fear.
Will come back later to rank the BigXII and my playoff teams ... .. damn this feels good. CFS has his signature win. . . this team became a team today.
