Whew. . . .

Charlie Flacking Strong now has his "signature" win . ..  TEXAS holds off the 2nd worst BigXII team with a last second FG capping a "nothing short than amazing"  drive with 25 seconds left on the clock, tie score game, 68 yard drive to finally seal the deal.  Maybe 2 of the best balls Swoopes has thrown all year, one to John Harris the other to Jaxson Shipley.

On a perfect night for football, it was 1st and foremost a win . .. I'll take winning. . .beats the heck out of losing. . .

We won a game with offense instead of defense though I imagine Sam Richardson (the very underrated ISU QB) wishes he could play his ENTIRE career vs TEXAS. . . .he finished 36/55 for 356 yards 3 TDs and 2 picks, one a pick 6. . . .this after going 16/26 for 262 2TDs and 1 INT last year. . .

This was ISU's highest point output of the year .. . greater even that what they put up on mighty Toledo without the fumble return.   Though it was 1 point shy of the most points their D had allowed.   This is a team that lost to D 2 North Dakota State but forced KSU to come from behind to win in the 2nd half. . . .

TEXAS opened with a pair of 3 and outs .. . .1st they 3 and out ISU in dominating fashion then the offense says. . hey our turn. . .and they run 3 plays capping it with a 28 yard strike from Swoopes to Marcus Johnson on the slant. . . .TEXAS forces another punt then crisply moves down the field, capping an 86 yard drive with a J Gray 2 yard TD. .

14-zip. . . looks like the rout is on .. . . .NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND. . . .this game would go back and forth, not to be decided until there were 3 seconds left on the clock.

Sam Richardson takes the Cyclones 75 yards in 12 plays setting the tone for the rest of the game and cuts the lead to 14-7, blending sharp passing with timely scrambles.

What is a TEXAS game this year without either the offense or ST's giving up a TD?   Well we continue that trend this week.   After forcing another ISU punt, we try the flanker sweep to John Harris (who otherwise had an AMAZING night), not just a fumble but a 51 yard return for a TD knotting the score at 14 All.

This would be a back and forth game with neither team able to create a 2 score lead after the 1st quarter. . .ISU answered TEXAS drive for drive and this is the concern going forward.

Our defense was gashed for 524 yards and 38 points .. . making it worse, it gave up drives of 12 plays 75 yards; 13 plays 75 yards; 11 plays 72 yards; 6 plays 81 yards and at the end of the game, a 51 second 6 play 75 yard drive to tie up the game with 25 seconds left.

ISU did this by blistering our secondary while our D did a very poor job of keeping the edge vs a dual threat QB.  Why is this a concern?   This week we face a better passer and almost as good a runner in Jake Watters of KSU and have Trevon Boykin (flip a coin, these are the 2 best QBs in the league) coming too.   Add to that the top passer in the BigXII coming to town in the person of Clint Trickett of WVU.    Watching tapes of this game, I can only imagine each of them salivating at the chance to cement their 1st Team All BigXII claim.

If TEXAS is going to make a bowl game (still have to win 3 of the next 5), we have to learn to FINISH . ..to put our cowboy boots on opponents throats instead of letting them up off the deck when we have them down.  We have to eliminate Red Zone INTs. . . we have to stop giving the ball away. .. . Oh yeah, we have to find a way to win the 3rd quarter. . . .3 times we went 3 and out, we did manage one FG. . . .

Let's review the highlights and the low lights as there are plenty of each.

Shawn Watson called a magnificent game .. . . sorta.   We had 7 really impressive drives where ISU was kept off balance. . .we had 6 drives of 3 and outs and would finish only 5 of 19 on 3rd down conversions. . .at the end of the day, this isjust not good enough to win at this level..  Watson failed to "wear out" the ISU D despite them losing their best DL early and we again see the Bermuda 3rd Quarter.  .. a quarter in which TEXAS struggles mightly.   Only 11 rushing plays to the RBs called in the 1st half.  .despite them running well.   of course Swoopes was 13 of 17 in the 1st half so you do need to stay with the hot hand .. .

Watson is very underrated (hmmm, who does this remind you of?) in his development of this offense and of Tyrone Swoopes.   TS has moved (at least in my opinion) into the top half of QBs in the BigXII.   Those last 2 completions down the sideline to move us into FG range were BIGTIME throws.    And these are the deeper touch passes he struggled with early in the year (duh, some of the hardest throws in football). . . .Now credit where it's due, Harris and Ship have made some great catches too but it all works together.

Still, the O put up 48 points and Swoopes had easily his best day of the season.   8 different pass catchers made grabs.

Chamaron Huges with a great deal of time at RT, didn't go back to watch to see if he started.  Not a bad game though his holding call was very untimely.  Shout out to Wick and our OL which is starting to come together.

Vance Bedford . . .not so fast. . . .his secondary was gashed and his DL repeatedly failed to hold the edge, letting ISU pick up 1st down after 1st down on 3rd down (ISU would be 9 of 19. . .very good . ..on the day).  .often by ISU getting to the edge. Despite Rod Babers homerism. . . .I was not at all impressed with the way our secondary was carved up like a Thanksgiving Turkey .. . and don't look now, the best QBs in the Big XII (sorry Petty, you are barely top half) are in front of us not behind us.

My 2nd note taken during the game "Bedford's run blitzes are going to kill us". . .just about proved true, if he doesn't blitz the correct gap, forget the 2nd level, the RB is in the 3rd level.    It's a high risk/high reward call and too many teams have exploited it so far this year.

Sticking with the D, I thought Steve Edmond couldn't go?   He played significantly in the 2nd half.  Malcom Brown continues to have an AA season. . . his DL teammates?  Not so much this weekend.   Our LB and secondary play?  If we do not play significantly better vs TCU WVU and KSU. . . . .we're not going bowling. . . .CFS/Bedford side's worst game of the year.  The only positive of their poor play, they let ISU score so quickly to tie up the game at the end, we had 25 seconds left to get into FG range.    And they started out like a house on fire.

Quietly, huge day for Special teams.   Hit both a long (44 yard) FG and the game winner, coverage teams were good.  Punting was good.. . .hey I'm greedy, would have liked to have seen Bernard rip a long KO return but he was no worse than solid.

In a day of football gluttony .. . I watched most of Baylor/WVU. . . KSU/OU .. . TCU/Okie Lite .. .sorry but the KU/TT game was a sleeper.    I tried to figure out who I would vote for if I had a ballot for 1st team All BigXII QB.   Today I give it to Jake Waters of KSU by a nano over Trevon Boykin of TCU.

So my Top BigXII QB:

Jake Waters KSU   (I would not dispute an argument for Boykin on top. . .)
Trevon Boykin TCU (better version of sam richardson. .that should concern many)
Clint Tricket

These are the 3 I see at the very top

Tier 2 QB:

Tyrone Swoopes
Sam Richardson
Bryce Petty
Trevor Knight (just barely)

1st 3 you can put in about any order.   Petty came into the year with Heisman Hype but he may have fallen the furthest.

Wild weekend of football. . . .

Never a bad thing when

A) OU gets beat,

B) Aggie gets ABUSED,   59-0. . . . .

C) Baylor gets bumped (actually beaten pretty good) though this did NOTHING to help the BigXII's playoff chances.

As TEXAS fans, we know we let 2 games get away (UCLA and OU) and had we brought our A game. . .we had a shot vs Baylor.

What TEXAS needs to go bowling:

Going into Saturday's game we had to win 4 of the next 6, now it's down to 3 of the next 5.  That's the good news, the bad news is that 4 of those teams are playing BETTER than TEXAS today and 3 of those teams will feature 3 of the very best QBs in the Big XII.    The one "easy" game is played in Lubbock where strange crap happening is normal.

After this weekend, I really don't like the matchups with either KSU or TCU as both have better dual threat QBs than Sam Richardson.   WVU is one of the surprise teams in CFB right now and their QB is a great passer.  Okie Lite is a winnable game but again, only if we come to play.

So if we can beat the 2 teams we should be able to out talent, TT and OSU, we will need to win one of KSU, TCU and WVU to earn a bowl game.   The positive, the offense if figuring it out.. . .the negative, 2 of those teams feature attacks our D doesn't seem to be able to stop.

Ranking the BigXII:

#1  KSU. . . .Some may argue TCU. . .but they lost to Baylor and Patterson still should have either punted or rolled Boykin out so points off for that.   KSU needs to win out and they most likely corral a playoff spot.  Need 1 win to go bowling.  But they control their fate, they win out, they win the BigXII.

#2
t142.r191677.gif
. . . same record as Baylor and lost to Baylor. . .. .screw it, my poll.   Needs 1 win to go bowling, needs someone to beat Baylor and win out to win the conference.

#3
t173.r191677.gif
. ..could make a case they should be #2.   Only plus for TEXAS, Trickett is not a dual threat QB . . .glad this game is in Austin.    Needs 1 win to go bowling.   Needs OU to lose another for them to win conference.

#4    Baylor. . . . .they have been exposed a bit though they need a WVU loss to win the conference with their win over TCU

#5
t169.r191677.gif
WIDE RIGHT (left?) .. . .Their "best FG kicker in the nation" missed a chip shot or OU would be sitting at #3.   That is why they play the games.   They have gone from "pre-season playoff favorite" to on teh outside looking in.  Still, their game with Baylor on the 8th may be big in determining the conference champ

#6
t137.r191677.gif
Okie Lite. . . .Exposed a tad by TCU .. . they do have 3 conference wins but over the 3 weakest conference teams.

#7
t163.r191677.gif
Sorry, giving up 45 to ISU does not merit a move up the rankings to me.   TEXAS sits today needing 3 wins in their last 5 to go bowling.   4 of those teams are ranked ahead of them though OSU not by much. . . .3 of their future opponents rank 1-3. . . .this ain't going to be easy and sadly, the weakest opponent is TT and weird shit happens in Lubbock.

#8
t138.png

#9   ISU. . . .we tired to make them look better though today, not sure ISU doesn't beat TT.

#10  Kansas. . . .

My playoff Ballot:

#1  Miss St   vs #4  and this is a tough call but Mich St

#2  FSU   vs #3  Ole Miss

Contending for the #5 spot(in no order)   Bama, Auburn Oregon ND  tOSU TCU KSU Baylor & Georgia

Love the write up as always!

I have mentioned a few times in threads, I think this team is learning how to win. Which is not common sense or something that is really easy to grasp. What ends up happening is you play up to and unfortunately down to the level of your competition.

In the end, this was another moment of growth for this team. As a fan I would love to have seen us dominate the game like we should, based on talent. However with a team that is in the middle of a major transformation, just winning can become difficult. Especially when you consider that they are coming off of a heart breaker of a last last week, where for all intents and purposes dominated the game EXCEPT where it counts! They needed to realize that they can win the games that come down to the wire.

The fact that ISU gave KSU a tough game is somewhat reassuring, but UT coming to Manhattan makes me uneasy.  Also, you picked Michigan State for the playoffs over Oregon, who picked them apart?

Lakeman,

your avatar racks. . . .oops   :(    I mean ROCKS> . . .

Based on the assumption that Mich St wins out while Oregon (thanks in no small part to injuries) drops another game .. .

It's not easy picking #4 . .. . . .

he finished 36/55 for 356 yards 3 TDs and a pick. . . .this after going 16/26 for 262 2TDs and 1 INT last year. . .

Echeese - the secondary had two interceptions, not one. Duke Thomas got one, Haines took the other for a score.

Richardson had three TDs, but directly contributed to two scores for his opposition.

From USA Today:

"Dylan Haines, a former walk-on, returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. An interception by Duke Thomas set up another score early in the fourth quarter."

Thanks for the write-up, Chuck.

Curious what convinces you that ISU is terrible?

0-4 in conference, 2-5 overall

Lost to North Dakota State.  ..a D 2 school

8th in the bigxii in scoring offense, 9th in scoring defense. . . and that trend (7th to 10th) continues in almost every statistical catagory

They only average 365 yards of total offense and that INCLUDES sat night where they "padded their stats" to the tune of 524 yards. . .good for #8 in the conference

With 2 notable exceptions, #3 in 3rd down conversion which we saw and #1 in Red Zone scoring.    So yes, they do some things right.

This is a well coached team without a great deal of talent though I have to say, I love their QB and pass catchers. . .

Now if you want to measure them vs TEXAS .. . . given how we shut down Baylor and OU. . . .ISU should be competing for a bowl game.

I corrected it but upon further review. . .that makes Richardson's performance more impressive in my eyes. . . ..I really didn't want to go into OT. . . .

ISU has teh #1 Red Zone offense in the conference . .. . not sure we could have won the OT battle. . . .

I don't know. We drove the field in three plays to score. I never saw Richardson do that.

Two INTs that turn into 14 pts isn't real impressive to me. If he doesn't do that, then it doesn't matter what Swoopes does in the last minute.

If you came away unimpressed with Sam's performance. . .. leading ISU vs the top D in the BigXII to 524 yards and their largest point total of the year (38). . . . .. OK

BTW, Richardson went 75 yards in 6 plays and in 28 seconds. . . and he was driving to tie the game. . .Swoopes was at zero risk. . . worst case if he turns the ball over  . . .it's OT. . . . .

All QBs have INTs. . .so did ours. . .that would be like claiming Swoopes wasn't outstanding because he took 3-7 points off the board with his Red Zone INT. . . .

We will have to agree to disagree . .. .

Richardson was outstanding. . ..IMHO of course

Thanks for the answer, Chuck. I'm not sure how to reconcile my preconceived ideas about ISU vis a vis this year's team. Yes they're 2-4 and a statistically poor team, but they were top 5 in Sagarin's SOS coming into the Texas game. At this point, only their loss to OkStU stands out on their schedule, IMO.

I'm interested to see how they fare against OU in Ames.

I suspect OU treats them like a slump buster . . ..

But if they get another game like we saw, . . . .they win. . . .

PS,

Hey Duke,

Saw that both AP and Coaches poll has Mich St over Oregon . ..and I'll wager it's more about where the 2 are heading rather than their previous match up but the craziness of CFB this year. .. . .I think you can make the case of the 1 loss teams for 6-8 teams to nab the #4 spot.

I do not think ISU is a terrible team, they lost to a NDSU team who is not D2 but a Div I FCS school, the reigning National Champion who also beat KState last season...

A difference without a distinction. . . .

They are NOT a D 1 school. . .thus they are a D 2 school. . . .

I saw ISU play earlier this season, but cannot remember the opponent.  The opp was respectable but not outstanding, that is all I recall.  I was impressed.  This is not the typical ISU team.  It is much better than that.  I think one of you said that UT and ISU were two of the best 4 loss teams in the country.  True that.

Hook 'em!

I have no problem with your opinion on that. I just see it a tad bit different.

I don't think Richardson was bad. I thought he was very good. Lots of leadership in the kid. He was above average in his performance against us, but not great. Great doesn't give up 14 points, as I see it.

Swoopes was only outstanding in a sense of where he's come from. He'll get there and last Saturday was VERY promising.

Iowa State is a very good team, IMO. They stayed with us, IMO, because Mangino game planned us well and stayed at step ahead all game. Bedford has got to adjust better. Iowa State's D was nothing special, but their offense has got some weapons and an OC who knows how to hurt you with them.

Enjoyed your Cheap Seats again. Always a good read!
