Update on Staff

All I ask for is a legitimate special teams coach. My god, I got more frustrated with our special teams than anything else. Is it really that difficult to cover a kickoff? Is it really that difficult to catch a punt so we don't start inside our ten every single possession? Is it really that difficult to not run into the punter, and keep drives alive?
It's difficult for most teams to have a coach dedicated to special teams alone due to NCAA rules. Teams can only have 9 assistant coaches (for a total of 10 counting the head coach). So if you do the layout:

1. Offensive Coordinator/QB coach

2. Running Backs

3. Offensive line

4. Tight Ends

5. Receivers

6. Defensive Coordinator

7. Linebackers

8. Defensive line

9. Defensive backs

Someone has to double up. And it's usually split among two coaches with one taking kick-offs and kick-off returns and the other taking punt, punt returns and field goals.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Well whoever we get, I hope has a little background with special teams. We struggled entirely too much on special teams.

I think that's a mistake. Not a big mistake, but a small one. Maybe you agree to a couple of more years to cement the transition but I'd like to see some new blood. His energy level is great, but he stopped listening to Mack after the first couple of losses (almost to the point of disrespect) so he'll have to recalibrate his attitude as that won't fly with Strong.
Personally doubt he's retained.
Did he stop listening to Mack or Manny? I had heard he disagreed with Manny and went back to man concepts. That's the main criticism, right? The Air Raid, etc. requires more zone, and Akina does not teach it well?

If you look at the data filed with the DOE, Texas is listing 12 assistant coaches, 13 football coaches in total. Alabama shows 9+1 (10 total), aggy shows 9 full time, 4 part time plus a head coach for a total of 14. http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/GetOneInstitutionData.aspx

I don't care how they split up the duties of coaching STs, but just have 1 person that is responsible for the overall ST. When it is split up among 3 or 4 coaches, then no one is responsible.

Some head coaches take on the role of SP. Teams, it creates a Strong accountability. I don't know if Coach Strong will do this or not. One thing is for sure, Texas' special teams, kickoff team in particular have been terrible. I don't think this will be allowed w Coach Strong. This team will be expected to execute in all phases of the game...I'm pumped.

Funny though because from 2001-2009 we were won of the best ST schools in college football with lots of blocks, fake punts,. KO 's run back for TD's etc.

Not sure what happened but our ST's went down the tubes the past few yrs

After the shit hit the fan the coordinators and a couple of the more senior position coaches began to run their own show with little input from Mack. I'm under the impression they might have even directly told Mack hands off. If you watched the dynamics on the sideline it was pretty apparent.

And The Major - for all of his claims otherwise - was pretty much in charge on offense for most of the season. He still wants to pin it on Mack when it suits him, but it's not accurate.

The dynamics during BYU were crazy for sure.

Towards the end, I wondered if Wyatt should have been in the booth instead of Major. It seems when game plans did not work, the fan base assumed Mack was meddling again.

This is from the NCAA. Hope this helps.

NCAA Article 11: Conduct and Employment of Athletics Personnel:

11.7.2 Football Bowl Subdivision - There shall be a limit of one head coach, nine assistant coaches and two graduate assistant coaches who may be employed by an institution in bowl subdivision football.
