Update of Mack Browns Announcement & Other Musings

Here is what I'm being told.
As I said, Mack is asking for a lot of $ to exit. More than has been contractually agreed upon. Mack has us between a rock and a hard place because he knows he will not be fired. On the Texas side, we just want this thing done but, it is going to cost us.

The releasing of Macks resignation by ESPN has assisted us by making it national news. This prevents Mack Brown from drawing the timeline out any further. Now Mack has to start telling people about his plans to retire, could the releasing of this news by ESPN be premeditated by the Power Brokers to put an end to Mack drawing this out further than Thursday? I would not doubt it.

As I said earlier, as early as Wednesday, no later than Thursday. It is now looking like Thursday.

The other side of this exit contract is the new position Mack is going to transition to. As we have heard from our good friends at Inside Texas, Mack is looking for a similar position that DKR held as assistant to the President. Mack will bring in 1 mill a year in this position.

Here is the PROBLEM. One of the Main stipulations the Saban camp had concerning accepting the HC job at Texas, was Mack cannot be in a position to meddle. As you can see, Mack is positioning himself to do just that. The Saban camp does want that cloud of a tattle tail Mack Brown in the President's ear while they are trying to resurrect the program. The Saban camp is acutely aware that Nick runs a program far different program than Mack does.

I hope this does not end up costing us Saban?

McP, thank you for the update. Here is my take on this, and I look at it as a former company officer who was involved in similar dealings.

This is Mack's lone chance to "negotiate". It's what happens in these deals. No way does Mack risk losing his buddy's Powers job, nor does Powers lose his over this. You don't throw the baby out with the bath water. No one wins then. IMO this plays itself out in the next 24 hours and everyone walks away contented. I have to trust the folks handling this. They didn't get where they are for no reason. The stewardship that comes along with their business roles is an earned one.

No more, no less. So I don't see that bothering Saban. If Mack insists on dragging things out, that could bother Saban though.

If that happens (Mack tries to drag things out), fire him immediately. Resisting reassignment is grounds for termination.

It certainly wouldn't be in his job description to mess with Saban but it would certainly be part of his personal agenda to take advantage of the access to "tattle tale" on Nick if he could. I could easily see Mack trying to mine his relationships with high school coaches to try and get a hold of any rumors he could use against Saban to poison the well with whoever the President is at the time...ESPECIALLY if its Powers. Then saying, see I warned you about this stuff. That's pretty much exactly the level Mack's brain works at right there.

In fact, Mack is petty enough that he might try to do that regardless of what his official status is with the University.

Exactly. There are now people screaming to fire Mack for a variety of reasons (the main one being they are believing that Mack is holding out to derail Saban, which I think is complete bullshit). IF Mack is holding off, I can honestly only think of one reason. He wants to inform the team and staff in person, not have them find out via TV or from someones sources. Too many people are jumping on the hate Mack bandwagon for absolutely no damned reason.

this is why i am so done with mack. i can see him doing this and "poison the well" at texas.

Pokey, where is your good guy right now? This was always my point about Mack, he isn't as good of a "good guy" as presented.

If He does, fire him and don't give a penny more than his buyout stipulates.

I think what Steve was saying is don't blame Mack if Saban doesn't come. Mack has been and always will be relevant to the analysis around the future Texas coach, just as he was when you guaranteed Saban to Texas. If there was any chance at all that Mack could affect a Saban hiring you wouldn't have told us 100%, as Mack was always a factor that anyone would've taken into account in their percentages.

+1, what evidence is there that Mack is just doing this stalling so he can talk to the team in person? if that was his #1 priority he would be back in Austin talking to the team, not out "recruiting". I think he is staying out as long as he can so JJ can continue to work his golden parachute for him.

It does not take long to tell players and staff.

It's not about Mack affecting a future coach, he does not need to be involved with the admin staff or future in Belmont. Other coaches don't be cushy seats after getting "fired" or "retiring" this way. He should be given the $2.75 million buyout not 10$ mill.

You don't know Mack is waiting to tell coaches, how long does it take. Mack being in Florida recruiting makes it clear he doesn't want to leave.

Those discrediting him and yelling to fire him need to think about something. If you were in his shoes, what would you do? I don't know of anyone anywhere that is being told you're not wanted anymore that would take it well, especially after having a great deal of success and helping build a giant in there industry.

I just think Mack wants to try and do this his way, and that's in person with his team, staff and family. I may be entirely wrong, but that's the way I see things going.

It does take longer to tell the staff and players when you're in New York and Florida and your team and staff are in Texas.

based on? JS reported just about 30 mins ago the Powers/Saban meeting went great and Steve Patterson has been given the green light to hire Saban
of course Mack wants more money and wants to make this hard. I suspect the powers at be will take care if it one way or the other.

These people are not going to let Mack kill Saban if that deal is really about to go down. Mack just wants a bigger buyout it seems and now he cant drag this out as MP mentioned with his stepping down already national across the country news

All these years we have heard about Mack talking about character and character building - not to mention integrity - if Mack wants to make this a hard process then how does this reflect on his character ? i say pretty poorly

I hope that the powers at be will take care of it

Lets hope all the issues get sorted out so that our program can move forward

The leave a kid in FL that won't play to you anyway. Go to Austin, talk to players and coaches. Then say " I love UT but I'm ready to retire."

I agree. It's my understanding that Jamail has his litigators hat on and is representing Mack in the negotiations.

If you didn't see a nice package coming for Mack, you weren't paying attention.

First time poster. Really enjoy the site. I'm grateful to Mcphaul and all the others that share what they hear. I live in a little town in western Arkansas, and the only source of info I get is sites like this, so thank you.

I want Saban to be our next coach, but I really don't care if it's Saban, Fisher, or Billy Bob the clown (Bozo's brother). I think any of them would be better coaches than Mack. I appreciate everything he's done, but I think it's time he moves on and lets Texas move forward..
