Top Three In Order

I've posted it here before. When I was with the NFL Network I saw first hand how much Gruden is respected for his knowledge of the game. He commanded the room and engaged everybody. he challenged others on their knowledge as well. I saw Mike Mayock just shake his head at Gruden and his dissection of X's and O's. He was impressed. Mike is considered one of THE most knowledgeable football announcers.
I shake my head at the anti-Gruden faction? The guy would hit the ground as one of the best recruiters in the country. I am seeing guys near the top of the list that have never won anything, and ignoring a coach who won a Super Bowl with Rob Johnson as his QB? Then there is the fact he, unlike some others, he expressed interest in the job.

At the least, he should be contacted and interviewed, if possible. Remember we got Patterson because of his interview.

McPhaul, why are you even printing this crap? Saban IS NOT coming. Quit giving false hope! You have been incorrect all the way through. I may be A ROOKIE on this board, but this talk is ridiculous. Texas IS NOT getting Saban, or either Harbaugh or ANY NFL coach. Let's get real...... This new coach may not be a sexy pick. It's time to start talking about realistic options............
I know y'all don't know me from Adam, but this, "You have been incorrect all the way through." is in itself inaccurate. No insider info here, I just work for a prominent businessman. Whether NS is still a possibility is uncertain, but before that fiasco a couple of weekends ago, there was most definitely a certainty.

I love this type of post... rattlesnakes strike and run back under their rock after spewing venom. I respect a man's right to have a contrarian position, but attacking the very man that allows you to be in his house might just be over the top.

McP, earlier you had guessed at 100% for NS with exceptions. Is it possible your current 50% is understated after the last couple of weeks?

Fellows, caution! Remember MB's warning on Friday or Saturday regarding a meltdown. It's slow right now, and patience is very much a virtue. I would love to know who our next coach is going to be, but since I'm not an insider, unless everyone knows, I don't know. That is for the best.

I'm new to this board, but I'm not new to bbs land. I was on Austin 360, hornfans, etc. Right now, silence is golden, and it is our ally.

Go get 'em, Texas, and Hook 'em!

We all got our hopes up, and while I do believe NS was very close before Mack started his stall tactics, I also believe his ship has sailed. Give me 1 reason why either Harbaugh or any other top tier NFL coach would come to college. Jimbo has to be the most realistic option, and Malzahn has nowhere near the personality to be the CEO of this program. If Jimbo isn't interested, it will end up being a call to ASU or Vandy............

Big name talk is good for social media and message boards, but just don't see it going anywhere........

Not spewing venom, just real talk. Any of us that believe NS is coming to Texas, probably also believe a fat man in a red suit is gonna come down their chimney on Tuesday night. Let's quit blowing smoke.........Show me a list that is realistic and I will show you a positive and enthusiastic post. I got burned out on all of the "my source" this and "my source" that over the last couple weeks......It was mostly BS and amounted to nothing more than good banter.......give me something concrete!

Pockey why do you have Saban so far down on your personal list?
For me it in large part due to age and will he be a good fit here. I conceded that he is one of, if not the best XandO guys, motivator and recruiters in the college ranks. The reality is Texas is a MUCH bigger job than even Alabama. Bigger school, bigger state and all that implies and then you have the other reponsibilities most notably the LHN.

Say what you will about Coach Brown but he did a masterful job of juggling the responsibilities over the years. If any ONE area of the job is neglected, the whole enchilada can go rancid. Piss off the donor base and you have problems. Believe it or not Texas does take it's academics seriously and if there is a systemic neglect of that with the football team the Coach loses the faculty support. Coach Brown had that support as well as anyone could expect.

The LHN is so huge for the University I don think even I have a full appreciation if what it will mean to th school. No other school is positioned to have its own dedicated network. Some schools may have the Radio/Film/Television program to support their own network but they don't have the fan base to support it. Some may have the fan base but their RTF Dept is more like Ned and the First Grade (See aggy.)

The HC at UT has to be a media savvy guy and have the vision to leverage the LHN in recruiting and broadening brand awareness even further. The HC has to be able to shift focus quickly from, say, a practice environment to a Studio interview without batting an eye and not looking irritated that he's there.

I actually think it is very easy to fail as the HC at Texas. It's very hard to succeed at Texas as HC but if you find the right guy it will be like magic. It could get so big so fast that we'll just sit back and enjoy a loooong ride. Texas has more assets available to it than any other program including the NFL (this was said to me by the Commissioner of the NFL.)

The problem at Texas s if you neglect one thing of the many things you have to juggle as the HC it all can spoil. That's what happened to Coach Brown. It was not the wins and losses. It was how the losses occurred and when they occurred.

He totally screwed the pooch on QB recruiting and he put his chips in on a DC that was ........ oh let's just let that one die.

Can Saban juggle like he's the main attraction at Barnum and Bailey? He hasn't at Bama. He just hasn't. He's been able to have a singular focus on the football team. He's been largely isolated from things like parents and the donor base. My brother's college roommate is the past President of the Ivory Club and he's expressed a frustration with Saban for being so distant and aloof. He rarely makes fund raisers, apparently. Maybe it's just that he picks fund raisers that this guy isn't invited to, I dunno. Point is, he's lived a charmed life at Bama. He hasn't even been called out for some of the terrible press conferences he's had. He wouldn't be able to get away with that at Texas. Be arrogant and snide to a LHN anchor in a interview, film session and Bristol calls Paatterson and says " WTF? We're paying you 300 mil to put up with this. It's not ood TV product. Get your guy in line!"

Yes, I do believe that would happen. But only at Texas and only because the LHN is "our" network.

But who am I to judge? It's not like I'm being offered 10 mil a year to Coach at UT. Heck, if I was, I'd be your juggler, I'd throw up a chainsaw in one hand followed by an egg then a water ballon. Ya, I'd juggle for that kinda scratch.

If it is indeed Saban, I hope he's a juggler too.

POCKEY, good post and i agree with a lot of it. There is a lot to juggle.

Mack made more mistakes than that. I know you are a Mack guy but his last week as HC was telling as to what type of person he is. He showed his true colors in the end. He clearly put himself over the program and may have put his boss in a bad place also. Bowden and others might have had bad endings at their schools but they didnt betray their own University like Mack did. That was first rate backstabbing and I will never welcome him back.

As to Saban, yeah the LHN requires some appearances but every coach does a weekly show and has appearances. It is a bit more at Texas but so is the money and the limelight. Winning cures all. If the coach wins then he can skip certain appearances, send an assistant on occasion, etc.

He's not a juggler. Patterson will have to fill in the gaps.
