Tom Herman's Introductory Press Conference: Live Thread

President Fenves and AD Mike Perrin will address questions first.

Fenves: "If we are given a bowl bid, the head coach will decide. In terms of staff, [coach Herman] is the CEO of the football program."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Perrin when asked about a plan B: "Tom Herman was my clear choice after meeting with him on Friday night."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Fenves on the Herman to LSU rumors on Thanksgiving: "I turned off my Twitter account a week ago."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Coach Herman is now set to answer some questions. 

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman: "I think I'm the right guy because I surround myself with great people. I would not have succeeded at Houston without my support group. You win with people."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman: "It's important to me that the great players in this state understand that we will do everything to keep them home."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman confirms that he had a team meeting at 4:15 with the players. Says he has not had a chance to study the roster yet.

Herman: "There's never going to be any expectations that are greater than anyone outside of our program. The expectations internally will be much greater than those outside of the program."

Herman: "I have not had a chance to talk to D'onta. I hope to speak with him by tomorrow morning."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman on Houston: "I'm extremely proud of the results, but I'm more proud of the culture we created. It was very, very hard work to change that culture. I am most proud of the influx of messages I'm getting from my players, saying how proud they are to have played for me for 2 years."

Herman on recruiting: "You are going to be the best trained team in America. Never once have I seen a football coach hoist a championship trophy and say 'we out-finessed them.'"

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman on how he has processed the change: "You don't. As a coach, you never really get a chance to think about those things. I'll leave the reflection to when I retire."

Herman on adjustments he needs to make as a coach: "None. Winning is hard. They don't hand out championship trophies."

 

[Harrison Wier]

Herman: "As a GA, you try to keep your mouth shut and work really hard. If they tell you to make 10 copies you make 12. If they tell you to bring a pencil you bring 3. My job was to make other coaches jobs easier. I took it upon myself to learn very valuable lessons on how to be a head coach."

Herman on his meeting: "I told them I knew they were very close with Charlie Strong. Some of the things we do will be very similar."

Herman when asked about his staff and Major Applewhite: "That will play itself out. I've been here for 6 hours."

Herman calls Mack Brown 'Mack' and immediately apologizes and says 'sorry, coach Brown.'

Herman on rumors for the past year: "There is a sense of relief. It was exhausting. Being at The University of Texas makes it worth it."

Herman on bowl bid: "Mike and I will talk about it. I haven't even thought about it yet."
