Is it fair to judge what kind a coach Herman is? I mean he has only been at Houston for two years and those really aren't his players. I think we need to give him four years before we can make any judgements.
This should be a sticky at the top of every "Give Charlie another year", "We are improving", and etc threads

 
I'm thinking Fenves and Perrin were hoping for Charlie to throw down two beat downs against Kansas and TCU. After last night though, there is going to be so much pressure to hire Herman. Even if he wins out, they might cave in the end.

We’ve had a number of folks ask us about a report from Rivals (Orangebloods) regarding a possible “red flag†as it relates to Herman and how this may become a sticking point for a potential hire.

For Texas fans in the Tom Herman camp this may feel like an attempt to justify retaining coach Strong. For some this may simply feel like ineptitude by the administration. And for those who are rooting for Strong to receive another year, it may feel like nothing at all. I spoke to a trusted source with knowledge of the situation and few things stood out.

  • Firstly, to respond to the specific questions we’ve been asked with regards to the “red flagâ€. I obviously can’t know for certain what the particular “red flag†was that was referred to in the report. I was told of a possible “red flag†by my source which I’m not going to mention (it’s already circulating on the message boards anyway) but I will say I don’t think it’s a deal breaker and it’s not particularly uncommon. I was told that Herman had an incident early on at Houston related to said “red flag†but the source wouldn’t divulge the specifics of the incident.
  • What I found very interesting is the source also told me that the LSU job is likely no longer an option. In fact the source went so far as to say that they believe Herman has already been informed that he is not a candidate for the job. IF true, then I have to imagine the Texas administration is aware of this. USC is going to retain Helton, I suspect Sumlin is safe at TAMU and if the LSU job is indeed off the table for Herman, then the Texas administration may simply know something others don’t…which is, IF Texas decides to part ways with Charlie Strong and go after Herman…they have negotiating leverage. The options that once looked like they were available to Herman (giving him ample leverage) simply don’t appear to be available anymore. I should also note that I recently discovered the Baylor staff is already being assembled behind the scenes which would indicate they’ve, at least informally, made their hire.
  • I was also told that even if Texas were to hire Herman, there is no guarantee defensive coordinator, Todd Orlando would follow. Orlando is an excellent defensive coordinator who is, in my estimation, part of the allure of Tom Herman. But I was told Orlando may have other plans.
  • One final note, I spoke to a long time friend who is a division one coach and asked for his thoughts on how he sees this Texas team’s prospect for success next year. He said, “they’ll win ten games no matter who the coach is there. You and I could take over that job and win ten games next yearâ€. That’s just one persons opinion but it’s a person who doesn’t have a dog in the fight and is a person with an extensive football background who at least believes coach Strong has built a foundation for future success.
I say all of the above to say this. Relax. The Texas administration knows a lot more than any of us do. If they choose to retain Strong then I suspect you’ll see the final tweaks needed to take this team where it needs to be next year. And if they choose to go the Herman route, I’m sure they have information and are savvy enough to ensure they broker a good deal.
