Thought on Gentry flipping to Michigan

I seriously doubt the kid flipped to Michigan because Murray and Locksley came for a visit. I've seen some stuff about him being afraid of competition. I disagree with those two reasons about as much as someone can disagree with something.

Given the right circumstances, what pro-style QB would not want to play under Harbaugh?

Wish the kid luck.

Good post, MG. Always hate to lose a talented recruit previously committed to UT, but I think

he is going to a great coach...especially if he wishes to play QB in the NFL in the future.

Best of luck to him.

It's ok.

The Horns had to go out of state to find a QB that fit the old Watson "pro" model.  After a year recruiting Texas, Coach Strong figured out that was not the style being coached by the best high school coaches in America.

Coach Strong already had Wickline and brought in a brainchild of the ou offense previous Texas coaches couldn't handle.  Now the Horns have a nucleus of coaching talent to leverage the best of Texas high school coaching to achieve championship level teams.

Having Gentry leave really puts the staff in a tight spot:

1. A QB (in addition to Merrick) is an absolute must in this class. They feel good about their chances to get KL or KR, but at this point in the game, it's late to just be feeling good.

2. Gentry was the prototype to run a true pro-style/NFL offense. If KL or KM commits, then the offense absolutely must change in order to maximize the talent on the roster.

Interesting times.

^I disagree. When he committed to us, Harbaugh wasn't at Michigan. Things and situations change. Do you have no respect for any player that was previously committed but flips to us instead?
I agree even though I'm a big fan of committing to the school and not a coach..... This gets an exemption lol.

If the rumors making the rounds are correct then Gentry made the correct decision.  Supposedly we will be going to a more open, up-tempo offense next year and that doesn't exactly fit his skill set.

Why bother?
So just to be clear. You're a QB, you've committed to a school, it's late in the recruiting process when you notice the school you've committed to is recruiting two other QB's in this class who are high-value recruits. Meanwhile, you're being recruiting hard by a very prestigious program that just brought in a very highly respected Head Coach. You're sticking it out at the school you've committed to, knowingly at risk of never starting due to the other two QB's, and letting your pride get the  best of you? Gentry made the decision he felt was best for himself. You can't fault these kids for changing their mind.

I have heard that CS told Gentry we would not go after any other QBs after he committed. Any idea if that is true?

I was happy when we had Gentry as a verbal. I thought he fit what Charlie and company wanted to accomplish. However over the last few weeks we have heard from several different recruits that the offense is going to go more spread and utilize skill of more athletic type QBs. I think we would all have to assume that this got back to Gentry, hell the coaches may have even told him.

Then you have the likes of Kai and Kyler coming in on visits, who are QBs that fit the mold of the new rumored offense along with Heard already here.

If you are Gentry and you see all of that going on and then you get a coach like Harbaugh from the NFL show up a major college that there was some interest early, he had to take a serious look.

Guys, I know we like to think the verbal commitments mean a lot, but they don't. Coaches break commitments to the players (not saying Strong would), all the time. Plus this has become big business. These guys who have that slim chance to make the NFL have to do what they feel is best for them. In this case going to play under Harbaugh had to seem like a better chance considering the rumored changes in offense here at Texas.

I have no hard feelings for the young man and wish him well.

I doubt that.  Kai was at the Under the Lights camp.  I'm pretty certain we were recruiting him before that.

Locksley can transition to WR under a pro-style offense. He's being recruited as an ATH.

I don't think CFS promises recruits anything with regards to playing time.
