The State of the Program

The comment about "not paying attention to Swoopes because he was pissed at the defense" caught me off guard.  I was shocked he said that.  The guy is being paid 5 mill to oversee the entire program.  He better start surrounding himself with competent and capable people to justify that kind of salary.
It didn't shock me, it was a good way to not have to comment right after the game. He will be asked about that again in his press conference.

If so, then the "not paying attention" part of the quote should have been worded differently.  You are right in that he will be asked about this again.

First of all I want CS to succeed but now for the ugly

Someone explain to me why a coach is being paid 5 million a year currently top 5 salaries and not have a clue about how the offense is doing. That's just a piss poor excuse. I have blamed Swoopes most of the last year, and caught a lot of grief for it at times. Then I started to question Watsons ability to coach up qb and play call. Caught some grief for that as well. Personally I think it's both here as well as the line. Now here goes the bomb. CS IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TEAM. I'm tired of the excuses for every god damn blowout and the constant BS about improving. Someone show me proof of improvement. Granted ND is a good team, but shit are we all going to forgive if we blowout the hapless owls?  I BET SOME OF US DO.

I want strong to succeed but FFS FIRE THAT INCOMPETITENT POS WATSON. HIRE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND CAN RECRUIT TALENT.

THIS BS OF BEING COMPETITVE WITH SHIT SCHOOLS LIKE RICE IS UTTER CRAP PEOPLE

OTHER SCHOOLS BRING IN NEW COACHES AND LOOK BETTER THEIR FIRST GAME THAN THIS SHIT SHOW WE HAVE

IM DONE WITH CORE VALUES HOOPLA. STRONG BE A GOD DAMN COACH AND DO YOUR FKN JOB. FIRE WATSON. PLAY THE FKN FRESHMAN THEN MAYBE JUST MAYBE WE CAN TOLERATE ANOTHER YEAR OF THIS CRAP

OMFG I SOUND LIKE A RANDOLPH DUKE ON STEROIDS

Holton Hill, Kris Boyd, Hager MLB, MJ OLB, Newsome, Burt, Wheeler, and most importantly HEARD. what the hell is the problem with preparing for the future. I mean didn't we waste last year on Swoopes to save Heards RS. What is the excuse now. I would rather watch Boyd get some experience and get beat a lot than watch Duke or Dylan or Bonney get violated over and over. I'm afraid we are becoming too content with bad. Even CS looked more beat down than pissed in post game.

and the next time I hear that pos fraud Watson say we are making progress Ill pay any reporter to club that asshat with their mic

Drew Lieberman at 247 just tweeted that in the last three games, UT has scored 20 points and given up three defensive touchdowns. Does that make him 1 under par?

That's like playing a 0-0 baseball game and the opposing pitcher hitting a walk-off home run off your ace.

DMAC,

Relax.  Why do you think ND kept this game and cancelled all but one other with us?  How long does it take to build an offensive line?

Here's the $100 question:  In Mackovic's next to last recruiting class, how many high quality offensive linemen did we take?

This is a mature group of people, the majority of which are men who understand football, and I expect you to know a great deal more about football than I do.  Where is your common sense, c'mon?  If I'm not mistaken, Paul Wadlington(Scipio Tex) predicted the game to be about 31-6, or in that neighborhood.  Strong will get us there, but you must be patient, and that takes longer than a 2 hour movie.

Java,

I would agree for the most part but where I draw the line is when the head coach looks utterly INCOMPETENT when he makes statement like "I wasn't watching swoopes I was too pissed at the defense" or Watson saying we are improving after three straight blowouts. I don't expect CS to coach the offense but I do expect him to find the right guy to do so. Tell me why was Heard not in the game at the end? Why are we still playing Swoopes?

what looks really bad is when ND players tell reporters they were shocked that Texas was that bad. they said that Texas has talent but looked clueless. that my dear friend is a direct reflection upon the coaches not the players. we all made excuses last year the line the learning curve blah blah. I'm done making excuses this team flat out sucked wind on Saturday. he'll an argument can be made the freshman looked better than the seniors

CS NEEDS TO MAKE CHANGES AND STOP MAKING EXCUSES

Btw he has had 2 off seasons and a full year only to look dismayed and beatdown at postgame.  Remember Chuck after BYU?  This wasnt Chuck, this was WTH just happened.  That is not a sign of confidence

1)  It's in ND's best interest to make Texas look as bad as possible.

2)  Strong doesn't need to watch Swoopes, it took about 3 series for me to see it was the same qb we had last year.  You?

3)  The defense?  I'm certain Strong was interested.  Simple changes can be made there that will make a big difference.  I saw several routes we should have jumped.  ND was begging for it, asking for it.  Last year Haines would have made the play, but this year for some reason he couldn't.  Strong can fix that really quick.  That's 6.

4)  The point they were asking him about, he had probably already decided what he was going to do.  If it were my team, I would have made the decision when Heard made the positive yardage immediately.

(Honestly, I probably would have done it during Spring ball, but Strong makes the big bucks.)

1. True

2. Yes he does.  He is the HC not the DC.  Obviously Watson hasnt proved shit to anyone that he is capable.  We didnt play Heard last year and I ate it due to RS reasons.  Why are we still playing Swoopes at the end of the game.  Because Watson prefers to throw 60 yard bombs on 3rd down and 3.  Thats why.  The guy is a joke.

3.  Jumping routes?  I can see that but unfortunately Im tired of watching our Senior CB Duke let receivers get behind him.  If hes even hes leaving.  That is what Dylan and Duke remind me of.  I hope for Dylan to do well but he was goated more than once.

4.  Heard made the teams first 1st down.  First pass completion.  He is going to make mistakes.  Id rather watch him make those mistakes than watch Swoopes anymore.  Watching Swoopes try to run the ball is like watching a 3 legged elephant galop down the field.

I get how we play our experienced players.  But at this point start preparing for the future.  We blew last year to save RS's.  No excuse to keep playing Swoopes other than to beat Iowa State with those Watson patented 60 yarders.

Some of the best plays came from freshmen.  Burt, MJ, and Kris Boyd on Special Teams.  Play these guys before they learn how to be comfortable with losing

The reason ND cancelled the other games is because Swarbrick wanted Patterson to go F@#K himself. Swarbrick wants nothing to do with Patterson and for good reason. He hasnt forgotten the ND/ASU issues Patterson created. If Swarbrick could have dropped the 15/16 games also I have no doubt he would have and last night's game could be easily have been 60-3 if Kelly hadn't taken pity on the team and put the backups in so early in the 4th.

I don't disagree with most of what you're saying. It's pretty well known that Swarbrick and Patterson aren't exactly friends.

That said, Kelly didn't take pity on us. He pulled his starters so they wouldn't get injured in meaningless minutes.

That may well be true about why Kelly pulled the starters. The fact remains that we can't draw any significance from the score. Texas had no influence on what the score was. UT couldn't score at all and ND could have scored 60 if they wanted to. Texas did not hold ND to 38, Brian Kelly held ND to 38 points. The UT defense was powerless.

I have never figured out the whole Wickline deal.  Not sure what all he is responsible for, but his focus should be on offensive linemen only.

Texas needs an OC that knows Texas HS football and understands the systems as well as the schemes that these high schools are running every year.  Look at the 7 on 7 programs that happen every year throughout the state.  Traylor, Morris, and Herman are coaches that get this.  I know some people on this board criticize Briles and Patterson, but they seem to have no problem understanding what offensive scheme works best for Texas high school athletes.
I criticize Briles because I think he is a scumbag.  It has nothing to do with football, and everything to do with his ethics.

I agree. We were fortunate that the defense held Notre Dame to what they did in the first half. It could have been much uglier.

Once Heard took himself out, I thought let Swoopes clean up his own mess.  I want a week's prep with Heard going in starting and someone else's game plan.  Traylor - fine.  Give Heard a chance.  Don't have him run the same plays Watson was calling.  Forget it, or we will see the same mess.  It does make some sense.

Ok, I am trying to recover from surgery.  Can't keep trying to make the same point.  Going to take a break.

Breathe.

Hook 'em!

I agree with what most of y'all have already said, just putting in my two cents worth.  A few thoughts on where we are and where we are going:

1. This next week is the most critical week of the Charlie Strong era.  The team and program are at a crossroads.  One way leads to an uphill climb back to being competitive and hope for the future.  The other way leads us back down a dark road where Strong will be unable to recover.  So, of all things I though most unlikely, here we have arrived with this game against the RICE OWLS being the biggest of the year.

2. Disturbing-football is won/lost up front.  Both sides of the ball struggled mightily.  The offensive line is TERRIBLE as has been said multiple times.  The defensive line did not get ANY penetration and I was somewhat surprised by this.

3. Hate to say this but the team looks weak.  What happened in the offseason?

4. Watching the body language of some of our best offensive players was painful.  Many times I saw Jonathan Gray look very frustrated.  A. Forman looked frustrated also.  Sad if the players KNOW they don't have a chance.  They deserve better.

5. Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline both need to go. Period.  No excuse for this.  What is most unsettling in watching teams like SMU and Houston role out offenses that move the ball while we are being sold a "wait till 3 years from now" line.  Texas got flat out embarrassed and that is unacceptable.  LAST in the nation in offense-at TEXAS?

6. All being said I really am pulling for Strong but if this team comes out against Rice an lays down then he needs to go and go now.  A loss against ND would have been ok but outside of a few players there was absolutely NOTHING that shows there have been ANY improvements made in the offseason.

This is a disgraceful.

With the 38-3 loss at Notre Dame Stadium, Texas has been outscored 117-20 in its last three games. Even more so that in the previous two losses, the Longhorns were manhandled on both sides of the football.

Looks like the same offense to me.

“It’s a new offense,†Swoopes said. “Everybody is kind of learning on the fly.â€

Carlton: UT not 'going backwards,' Strong says after 38-3 loss to ND, but does Spieth disagree?

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — All the Texas offseason talk about a new, prolific offense and young talent dissolved into the harsh reality administered by No. 11 Notre Dame.

Maybe the offensive scheme has changed. So have many of the names on defense. But way, way too much remains the same as it did in blowout losses to TCU and Arkansas to close the 2014 season.

With the 38-3 loss at Notre Dame Stadium, Texas has been outscored 117-20 in its last three games. Even more so that in the previous two losses, the Longhorns were manhandled on both sides of the football.

“I don’t think we’re going backwards,†coach Charlie Strong said. “It’s the first one of the season. We have to somehow get it moving forward.â€

Notre Dame redshirt sophomore quarterback Malik Zaire, making his second career start, completed 19 of 22 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns. His quarterback rating was a stratospheric 250.9.

The knock on Zaire in the preseason had been his passing. Zaire had little problem Saturday, taking advantage of breakdowns in the Texas secondary.

Zaire’s Texas counterpart, Tyrone Swoopes, was under heavy pressure most of the game. He completed seven of 22 passes for 93 yards, with 48 of those yards coming on a completion to John Burt.

Redshirt freshman Jerrod Heard entered the game on the third series and gave Texas a brief boost with a couple of first downs. Heard got the wind knocked out of him, then returned briefly in the first half. Swoopes played the entire second half.

The Irish had a 527-163 total yardage edge on Texas, which dropped its first season opener since a loss to North Carolina State in 1999. It was the worst opening loss since a 47-6 hammering by BYU in 1988. The talk going forward will be less about streaks than harsh reality.

For now, Texas was trying to treat this like an aberration. “It’s always a shock when you go out and get embarrassed,†Strong said.

The performance actually raised more questions than it answered, not a good sign to begin the season.

Yes, freshman middle linebacker Malik Jefferson of Mesquite Poteet showed he has the ability to play, making nine tackles, including 21/2 for losses. But he looked less certain in pass coverage.

The offense looked much like the old offense in terms of scheme — and results.

“It’s a new offense,†Swoopes said. “Everybody is kind of learning on the fly.â€

But center Taylor Doyle acknowledged that the main change is the tempo.

“I know the progress has been made,†said Shawn Watson, the assistant head coach for offense. “We have to show up when the lights go on.â€

Texas didn’t have a first down until the last minute of the first quarter, when Johnathan Gray rushed for 11 yards on his first carry, and didn’t get into Notre Dame territory until the final minute of the first half. Gray, expected to carry the offense as senior, finished with eight carries for 40 yards. Emotional on sidelines, Gray said he was upset by the repeated three-and-outs early in the game, not his touches.

“Coming out here in Notre Dame, the stage is set,†Gray said. “For us to come out here and lay an egg is mind-boggling.â€

Texas’ struggles’ even prompted this self-deprecating tweet from former Longhorns golf standout Jordan Spieth, who has missed his last two cuts after rising to No. 1 in the world: “Texas’ offense looking about as useful as my last 4 rounds....â€
