The State of the Program

I have no inside information, and I only took pain meds again about 5 minutes ago...couldn't handle it anymore - surgical discomfort not football.    

I have no doubt that Strong will do what it takes to take Texas back to the top, even if it means reassigning a coach, hurting a coach's feelings.  He has said that he cannot fail, and I don't think he will.  I don't think he has any blind spots.  He gave Watson a chance.  

I actually approved of letting Swoopes finish last night, once Heard took himself out.  Whether Heard had a bruised rib, or whatever.  We were another score down.  The offense needs to be tweaked, not overhauled, and someone else needs to be calling the plays.  I imagine Traylor and Strong have had many good conversations, enlightening.

Hook 'em, Charlie!  Let's get 'er done.

I'm honestly dumbfounded as to how Shawn Watson has stayed in the coaching profession this long as an offensive coordinator.

I was in the stands last night, and it looked really bad in person. Caveat, I'm not a football coach, and don't claim to be. I do wonder, (for some of you that have been/are coaches, or those on pain meds... ) did Swoopes not keep on the read play almost every time last night, regardless of the position of the end? It certainly appeared that way from where I sat.

Obviously, he told Strong he could deliver an offense when he could not.  I believe that Strong is one of the most intelligent coaches we have had, and I don't think he suffers fools easily, nor do I believe that he tolerates being lied to.

He watched the offense in practice, now he saw it in game action.  Does anyone think he likes what he saw?  What about the 3 and outs with Ty, then Heard comes in, moves the ball, but unfortunately must come out.  Suddenly we go stagnant again.

How much credibility does Watson have now?

Joey, I've been at my kiddo's since surgery, and don't have a recording of the game.  However, when I counted, Swoopes rarely distributed the ball.  It was like having a point guard with 1 assist.

Stron's press conference last night was ahead scratcher. When asked about the problems on offense, Strong's response was "Well, I realy didn't pay a lot of attention to the offense, I was over with the defense trying to sort that out."

If he is going to pay zero attention to the offense, he needs to get someone who knows how to run an offense in as OC. Coach Strong as much as admitted he has no idea what is going on with the offense.

It does not matter where I heard the info.  After watching that debacle last night, I would not be surprised if he is not the only coach unhappy with some decisions.

It matters if you want any credibility about a so called rumor.

Randy, there have been times that Strong has spent most of practice with the offense, or so I have read, but that is very different from a game.  He is a defensive coach.

I believe that most of his experience with Watson was during the Bridgewater years, and those were very good years.  That being said, Strong knows what is at stake here.  I think Watson has made two mistakes at Texas already.  The first was not giving Heard enough attention last year.  Strong became aware of that, and rectified it, but some time was lost.  The second mistake was telling Strong he could install the spread and then obviously not doing it properly, for whatever reason.

We know we have at least one quarterback that can run the spread, and that qb is Heard.  I have my doubts that Swoopes has ever run a spread option.  You have to have athletes to run it, and the story goes that he was the only athlete on his high school team.  Anyway, that's my theory.

If that logic is sound, Watson would be toast.

Swoopes is too slow to run any offense that requires a QB to run - like the spread or any variation of it.  I don't mean slow in the sense of how fast he runs, but slow as in quickness.  This may sound strange, but I think he would be much better suited for an offense like Alabama's.  But we don't have the linemen to run Bama's offense.

We are between a rock and a hard place, as it is too late to totally discard our offense and implement another.  We have to find a way to make this one work.  How, I don't know - we simply don't have the talent nor the experience to get it untracked.

Swoopes can't do it.  That's the end of that story.  Heard might be able to, but he only went 4 plays before he was physically knocked out of the game.  I'm afraid this was not an anomaly as I don't think he has the body to withstand the punishment he will receive behind our God awful line.

And receive it he will.

I'm not asking for credibility.  I am passing along what I heard 3 weeks ago and thought there could be some truth to the rumor after last night's game.  If you are looking for details, I do not have any.

 He's being paid 5 million a year and remembers the names of Notre Dame players better than his own. Anyone else notice that ?
