***Texas vs. Stanford Baseball Offical Game 2 Thread***

Some may disagree, but Stanford has some really good pitching.  They'll be a Top 25 team before it's all said and done. 

Yep, which is why a series split will be a pretty good result. 

Stanford took 2/3 last weekend against Fullerton who has CWS potential. That Stanford club is good, they'll win some ballgames this year. 

2/4 against Stanford will look good on the resume from a RPI standpoint at the end of the year.

And simply being comparable to a top 25 team is also not up to my Texas standards. Maybe I've been spoiled. 😉

Couple of post-game notes and a little info on the injury front.

It sounds like we're going to be w/o Rand for the remainder of the Stanford series due to his hand injury.  The thought is that it isn't broken, but as anyone watching the broadcast on LHN could see, it was swelling up pretty rapidly.

Regarding Patrick Mathis, his hamstring injury, while not deemed as serious as a tear, will likely keep him out for the next couple of weeks. 

Neither is good news for Texas, as this puts a strain on the OF depth.  We will likely see a platoon effort on the ends from McKenzie, Harlan, Kennedy Jones and possibly Denny while Guwitz holds down CF. 

Hat's off to Brady Harlan tonight.  After coming in for the injured Mathis last night, and struggling in his first collegiate action, (0/4 3Ks,) he bounced back tonight.  The freshman went 2/3 and showed a very smooth swing on his two singles into LF.  He appeared much more relaxed at the plate tonight than he did last night.  Good to see the turnaround. 

Joe Baker was also rewarded for his persistence tonight.  Following an 0/5 effort on Thursday, where he hit the ball hard but couldn't find a gap, he also went 2/3 tonight and scored a run. 

Overall, the Horns struck out 11 times tonight, only 3 looking, compared to 18 Ks, 6 looking last night.  While it's not a significant improvement, and the hitters still have work to do identifying the offspeed pitches, it is an improvement.  The hitters are not going down without a fight, and have aggressive approaches for the most part. 

Also of interest, the Longhorns stole five bases tonight.  I am really liking the aggressiveness on the base paths.  If this continues throughout the season, it gives us another weapon to elicit concern from our opponents.

I am satisfied that Stanford has a very good pitching staff. You are talking about the reality of the situation. I'm just talking about my expectations which admittedly are probably too high for this team. I do not want to consider a split at home as successful. But against a good team maybe I should.
