*****Texas vs Rice Game 1 Thread*****

Rice gets an unearned run and the lead in the top of the 9th off a sacrifice. Texas has the meat of their lineup batting down 2-3

RECAP by Will Baizer:

Texas dropped the first game of the four game series 2-3. Post game Pierce preached having a short memory, as the Longhorns have a double header the next day.

It was a hard fought pitcher’s duel through most of the first 6 innings. Morgan Cooper was on fire through the first 5 innings Cooper threw 67 pitches (46 strikes) and recorded 6 K’s. But Texas couldn’t help out their pitcher as they struggled with Rice’s veteran Dane Myers – who recorded his longest outing of his career with 90 pitches (50 strikes and 3 K’s). After that Cooper threw 20 more pitches (12 strikes) before he was relieved by Nolan Kingham.

Texas was leading 1-0 in the 6th inning off a sacrifice fly from Kacy Clemens, but Morgan cracked a bit and let up a two run double fly over the head of a diving Travis Jones in left field. Texas responded with a run of their own off a Kody Clemens bomb to right field.

After the 6th Kingham came in. He started off on fire hitting 97mph and retiring the first 7 batters he faced. But the game slipped through his fingers as he allowed one run off of one hit. Notch an assist on that run off a passed ball from Michael Cantu and a questionable call by the home plate umpire to allow the run to cross when the ball had hit the Rice batter DiCaprio on the foot in the batter’s box. Once it hit DiCaprio’s foot (which was blatant), it should’ve been a foul ball and DiCaprio back in the box with a 2-2 count. Instead Rice won the game off that run.

Texas couldn’t get another run after that despite having runners in scoring position. In fact, Texas had a hard time with RISP. The Longhorns stranded 5 runners in this game, one on 3rd and two on 2nd. Freshman Ryan Reynolds accounted for 3 of those stranded runners and the other two were given to the other Freshman, Austin Todd.

Rice had their struggles at the plate too. They just couldn’t put metal to ball as they got 8 out of their 8 strike outs swinging at air. And the Texas pitchers came right at the Rice batters as well. Morgan Cooper recorded 17-24 first pitch strikes and Nolan Kingham record 8-10 first pitch strikes.

Stars of the game: Freshman David Hamilton and Sophomore Kody Clemens

Hamilton who made two spectacular defensive plays consisting of one back handed grab and long toss to first for an out and another bullet to first on another long throw to first.

David Pierce had high remarks for Hamilton, "He was outstanding... Not just okay. He was excellent tonight... He's a kid who's going to have some range that other don't."

Kody had a hot night at the plate notching the Horns’ second run off the homerun and tallying a single. Kody was very excited about the new strategy at the plate by the new staff stating, "I loved it! We just have a better opportunity to swing the bat."

There was one time in the game where I really disagreed with Pierce, where tie game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th and Kody Clemens on 1st, Pierce took him out for a pinch runner. Why take out your best hitter there? It ended up not mattering, so whatever.

ANYWAYS

Game 1 tomorrow is Kyle Johnston vs Ricardo Salinas. Game 2 is a freshman dual with Blair Henley vs Matt Canterino. All righties.

My 2-cents

Texas and Rice each gave up 2 earned runs to the other team. The difference was a fluke of an inning in T9. Passed ball, replacement umpire, clear bunt foul off of the batter's foot that is not called but the runner is allowed to advance to 3b? I'm still a bit fuzzy on this and will have to watch the replay when i have some time. Result was one unearned run. Texas outhit Rice 7-4. Texas had fewer Ks than Rice. The pitching was solid all night. Texas needs to get better with RISP, as Will mentioned. This was one game, and as a heavy underdog, I felt Texas played very well. Sure, there are some areas that can be improved upon, but that goes for just about every team after the first game of the season.

Key stat: Bear19 ran out of Dos XX Amber.

Tomorrow is on the horizon; let's play 2!

Sorry fellas. I had some minor surgery today and was forced to take a pain pill at about 730. Just woke up. I was afraid to pop a top.

I take full responsibility for this loss.

The issue was that the home plate umpire's view was blocked by Cantu and the two field umpires didn't see it as well; therefore, it played out as a simple sacrifice bunt with the hitter thrown out at 1st and runner advancing from 2nd to 3rd.

The next part of the equation I found most interesting as Coach Pierce elected to move the IF in with a runner at 3rd and 1 out and not intentionally walk the next hitter to set up a potential inning ending double play.  Not saying right or wrong, just interesting to observe our new head coach in a high leverage situation.
