O'Brien works a full count then hits a solid ball to CF, but not enough. 1 down

Martinez has another multi-hit game. He hits a single to CF. Runner on 1st, 1 out

Ware hits blooper to Austin Todd in CF. Todd dives for it but misses. Fortunately, Mathis was backing him up. Ware gets a double. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out

Mendenhall attempts a squeeze but misses. He then strikes out on a high fastball. 2 outs for Ridgeway

Zaragoza hits a grounder to Boswell. Easy play there and Ridgeway gets out of the jam. Heading to B8, 2-1 OU

Thomas Hughes is replacing Austin O'Brien at 1B for the Sooners.

Connor Berry is still pitching for OU.

Mathis strikes out on 3 straight breaking balls. 1 out

Jones also strikes out on 3 straight breaking pitches. 2 down

McKenzie hits a sharp grounder to SS Zaragoza, who makes the play. 3 up, 3 down in B8. Texas has one last chance. Heading to T9 trailing 2-1

Our plate approach in the later innings today has been disappointing.

And home Blue is horrible.

Brewster hits a sky-high fly ball to LF. Jones secures it for the second out

Flansburg strikes out after working a full count. Final chance for the Horns, heading into B9.

Boswell, Cantu, and Reynolds due up

You guys would've seen me come through the TV if that last pitch wasn't called a strike.

Boswell grounds out to 1B to start the inning. 1 down

Cantu draws a walk. Runner on 1st, 1 out

Tyler Rand in to pinch run for Cantu. Rand is a threat to steal, but Martinez is solid behind the plate

Reynolds is very over eager.

Rand tries to get a good jump off a ball in the dirt, but Martinez throws him out. Gigantic mistake by Rand. 2 outs

Reynolds strikes out, but the ball gets by Martinez and the throw is not in time. Runner on 1st, 2 outs

Trace Bucey pinch hits for Austin Todd.

Tyler Schimpf is coming out of the bullpen to pinch run for Reynolds at 1B.

Bucey strkes out swinging. That'll do it for Texas. OU takes game three 2-1. Texas wins the series 2-1.

The Horns will face Texas State on Tuesday at the Disch at 6:30 p.m.

Well, the good news is Texas won the series. The bad news is Texas could've swept.

Texas Drops the Red River Sweep After Losing Game 3 to the Sooners 2-1

By Will Baizer

It’s a disappointed Sunday for the Longhorns baseball team as they came into the day hoping for a sweep, but

Texas falls to Oklahoma 1-2 in the 3rd game of the series.

It appeared that Texas used up all their offense in the first two games of the series as their bats just couldn’t find balls, and the balls they did hit went straight to the defense.

The day started out well for Texas as in the bottom of the 1st, Kacy Clemens (0-1 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly to score his younger brother Kody Clemens (1-4) to take an early lead on their Red River rival.

That would be the last of the scoring for the Longhorns as they went on to hit 0-5 with RISP, 1-10 with 2 outs, 2-12 with runners on the bases, and .172 for the entire game. It’s just a continued story of inconsistency for the bats as

Texas now owns the 3rd worst batting average during conference play with .214.

Losing Kacy Clemens in the bottom of the 4th inning didn’t help. Kacy was thrown out of the game for arguing a called strike three. Kacy Clemens disagreed with the umpire, turned around, walked back to the dugout, and said, “That was so bad.” Apparently, this rubbed home plate ump David Wiley the wrong way and he immediately tossed the Longhorns’ star 1st baseman. Fans may remember David Wiley as the ump who called 3 balks in the Texas vs Texas A&M game.

Kacy Clemens will now have to sit out the game vs Texas State Tuesday at Disch-Falk Field.

After that, it was all pitching for the two teams. Texas’ pitching was good, but a little wild. Kyle Johnston pitched through 6 innings, recording 4 Ks on 92 pitches, but also giving up 5 walks. Kyle Johnston gave the Longhorns a great chance to win. David Pierce praised his starter after the game, “The thing that I see more than anything, so far with our starting pitching is they continue to give us an opportunity to win the game. His stuff was good. Occasionally he got around the ball. For the most part he really pitched down in the zone… I was really proud of what he did. He gave us a chance.”

In fact, Texas currently has the 2nd best staff ERA in Big XII conference play with a team ERA of 2.80.

While Johnston did not bring his best stuff to the mound Sunday, it was just enough to keep the Longhorns in the lead… Until the 6th inning.

After back to back walks, Kyle Johnston put himself into a jam with two runners on and only 1 out. He then left a ball a little too far over the plate and OU’s Renae Martinez (2-3 RBI), knocked the ball into right center field to tie the ball game up.

Kyle Johnston was done, so David Pierce decided to bring in Chase Shugart to maintain the tie. Shugart started off the inning by nailing Kyle Mendenhall (0-2) in the head and letting Ben Hollas (1-4 RBI) get a ball to fall into the left center field to get the winning RBI double.

Oklahoma’s Nathan Wiles (2.61 ERA) got the game started off only allowing 1 ER while getting 4 Ks off of 67 pitches through 4⅔ innings. But the guy who really got the Longhorns guessing was reliever Connor Berry (0.93 ERA) who got the win after pitching 3⅓ inning and recording 5 Ks off of 41 pitches.

Just a frustrating day against Connor Berry for the Longhorns. Berry was able to get the Texas batters to lose their patience in the batter’s box and swing at balls in the dirt to end the game.

Texas had chances to take the tie the game and even take the lead back with multiple runners in scoring position, but just couldn’t figure out Connor Berry.

Texas falls to 22-13 on the season and 6-6 in conference play.

Texas still takes the series 2-1 against their #14 ranked rivals, which will help them come postseason time.

I was only able to listen to a couple of innings today in between church and nap time.  Sounds like losing Kacy didn't help the cause much.  I'm really glad to see Johnston back starting, even if he still needs to work on control.  We could stand to use Mathis back in the lineup and hopefully get the bats swinging a little more.

Let's hope for another good series against Baylor next weekend.
